Hundreds of Danish protesters, many of whom are military veterans who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan, staged a demonstration in Copenhagen on Saturday outside the U.S. Embassy.
The group was protesting President Donald Trump’s push that the U.S. acquire Greenland from Denmark and his remarks at Davos that NATO forces "stayed a little back" when they fought alongside the U.S. in Iraq and Afghanistan.
"They have a feeling that they’ve been betrayed," Carsten Rasmussen, president of the Danish Veterans Association, told The Associated Press. "And of course, they are angered by this. They deployed. They fought with the Americans. They fought with the Brits. They fought together. They bled together. And as you have heard here in front of the American embassy today, 52 of them never returned."
Forty-four Danish soldiers died in Afghanistan, the highest per capita death toll for a NATO country in the war, and eight more died in Iraq. The population of Denmark as of 2025 was just over 6 million.
During the protest, demonstrators laid 52 flags with the names of the fallen outside the embassy.
"Behind all these flags, there's a guy, there's a soldier, there's a young man," Lt. Col. Niels Christian Koefoed, a Dane who served in Afghanistan, told Reuters.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called Trump’s remarks about staying a "little back" ""insulting and frankly appalling," to which Trump wrote on Truth Social: "The GREAT and very BRAVE soldiers of the United Kingdom will always be with the United States of America!"
He didn’t, however, acknowledge the sacrifices of other NATO troops.

1. UN payments
2. NATO spending
3. Involvement and losses on basically any war we've had for decades.
No pays as much as the US on all of these, while the damned EU and UK have hundreds of millions more population.
We have Freeper voices that lambaste Trump doing this and “damaging” the relationships with these fraudulent allies (often these are FReepers who have “gone native” in their foreign lands, such as Germany.
The only way any of these lousy countries would ever do something more appropriate to their claimed commitments is to be humiliated and shown for the limp wristed countries they are. Even a recent NATO commander admitted as much.
Everyone wants the US to spend for their wants. It must stop and it must be ridiculed, as should everyone who is seeking back that terrible status quo we had for decades.
I, however, want to see those countries “man up” and tax the absolute snot out of their people to bring themselves to were their “guaranties” should have totaled to, all along.
Only Poland seems to be trying.
All the rest are untrustworthy SOBs, as are the people who defend them.
NATO made sense during the Cold War.
We should have dismantled it after 1991.
Time to leave NATO.
I'm fine with being allies with Poland.
The EU should take care of the Baltics and Finland. Really it's their "sphere of influence". Not ours.
If they can't handle the responsibility then maybe the Russians will be happy to do it for them.
Denmark has fewer peeps than the commie Mondami’s NYC.
Relatively irrelevant.
Protesters?
They are Antifa Europe azzholes.
And these guys:
“many of whom are military veterans who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan.”
Can they alone defend Greenland from the CCP?
LOLOLOL!
Dream on Denmark military.
You can’t even defend Denmark.
I hear Antifa Europe is already protesting in Milan ahead of the Olympics which will be riddled with Antifa protests and other assorted dung beetles of humanity.
No one will be watching!
That’s the problem with all these worthless SOBs not wanting to work. All they want to do is sit around on their asses, whine about everything and throw tantrums and molotov cocktails. Real ahos.
Didn’t Trump already sort of walk back on that statement?
He did it last week, after England’s King Charles brought it up in a speech. Apparently, the Danes are not yet ready to let go of their anger on all things Trump.
The descendants of Vikings are whining about the combat deaths of military volunteers. And the Danes wonder why they are not fully respected.
This Little "lousy, limp wristed" Denmark has made the President of the United States humiliate himself, and his country into the bargain, and climb down on international television from his bellicose threats to invade Greenland.
These little, "limp wristed countries," like Denmark, forced the President of the United States to humiliate himself, and his country into the bargain, and climb down on international television from his intemperate threats to impose tariffs on "little, limp-wristed" countries who opposed his aggression against Greenland.
Mindless Trump bots, myopically afflicted with TSS, ignorant that Trump received nothing more than he was initially entitled to, pepper this forum with fawning adulation for the man whose antics alienated half a billion friends in Europe and needlessly humiliated our country.
Effing Danish Dummies.
Only President Trump’s intentions with Greenland will secure America’s national security. Only America can extract Greenland’s rare earth minerals which will bring great wealth to Greenland’s people. Greenland can ill afford their anemic Danish masters.
Those driving the opposition to Trump’s efforts in Greenland have ulterior motives favorable to China and Russia.
GFY!
52 military deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan????
US military deaths in Iraq, 3,237.
US military deaths in Afghanistan, 2,249.
US contractor deaths, 7,800.
Wounded US service members, 50,000.
8 Danish soldiers in Iraq and 44 in Afghanistan are a tragedy. But perspective causes many to hold back the tears. I’m glad they found 100 protesters in a country with 6 million residents, of which a quarter of them ( 1.4 million for those in Rio Linda) live in Copenhagen.

“I’m glad they found 100 protesters in a country with 6 million residents, of which a quarter of them ( 1.4 million for those in Rio Linda) live in Copenhagen.”
That do seem smol, even for such a tiny, baby country. Surprised it rated a story. TDS....
The whole Denmark / Greenland affair was posturing. We were never going to “invade” Greenland and we always had the ability to put more bases on Greenland, regardless. So what did that all accomplish?
We got to shake up the EU to show they needed to man up and not rely on the US to cover for their slothfulness. We got to see who would, or wouldn't, stand to say the US should have Greenland in an even closer arrangement. We made little Denmark look impotent against the US, because it cannot defend Greenland—heck, it even needed Germany, France, Sweden, Norway, Finland, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom to offer troops to “protect” Greenland, because, well, Denmark is nothing. Throwing in seven more Nothings to stupidly “defend” Greenland against nothing was beautiful to see. They will send troops to Greenland, but not to Ukraine, which they all outwardly claim is their biggest bugaboo. Obviously, Ukraine means nothing to the EU.
The EU, with 500 million people, can't begin to tax its people enough to be a pimple on the US's butt, when it comes to defense spending. They were all supposed to man up and provide for their defense, which supports the rest of NATO, but countries like Germany insist the real priorities are Global Warming and importing Rapeugees to impregnate all those wonderful German 12 year olds. England got the start on them with Rapeugees and Germany, followed by Sweden and the rest, all saw how wonderful it was to have non-working criminals from outside the country do the crime citizens just wouldn't do.
And you, Nathan Bedford, are strutting around stating the US or Trump is somehow “humiliated.” No, it is not, but Stockholm Syndrome is a real problem with people like yourself.
“Equals” are not made up of helpless, homely dependents with one provider. Actually, that paradigm is wrong. The whole EU is actually a basket of freaking 500 million parasites, feeding off of the United States, for going on, well, since World War II, at a minimum.
It is high time the parasites die or that, if they ever intended to be equals, that they stop being spoiled brat 11-year olds and actually live up to what is expected of adults. Tax the absolute snot out of your citizens and get your countries up to snuff. Adults do not trust 11-year olds to drive anything but a go-cart and to not do much else reliably except pick buggers and complain about homework. Make up for all the decades of virtually no defense spending and play at the Big Boy's table. Currently, no supposed “ally” can claim to be a “big boy,” yet.
What did it take to be an “equal” with the US? Just spend the percentage, every year, that all NATO countries said they would do. There is a similar situation with UN funding, and the US pays an incredibly outsized proportion of that, too.
Grow up, Nathan Bedford and may the countries you defend become adults such that we can all come to the same table as effective equals and be true friend that choose to be with each other.
A point I have made several times in this forum. The whole point of putting a very thin line of European troops in Greenland was not to actually wage war in defense of Greenland against an American invasion, but to make such an invasion politically preposterous and thus frustrating Trump's negotiating tactic of bullying. Bullying was not possible once the trip line was put in Greenland. Europe won this round, Trump was humiliated.
we always had the ability to put more bases on Greenland, regardless. So what did that all accomplish?
My point exactly, another point that was plainly made but ignored. Yes, it accomplished nothing for America we did not already have except a near rupture of NATO, the alienation of half a billion friendly nations, the potential triggering of a nuclear arms race, and the creation of an incentive for spurned European nations to cut deals with China.
We got to shake up the EU to show they needed to man up and not rely on the US to cover for their slothfulness.
By the time of the Phony Greenland War, NATO nations were well on their way to voluntarily increasing their defense spending and defensive buildup, including, importantly, defense cooperation. These needed reforms should be marked to the credit of Vladimir Putin as much or more than to the credit of Donald Trump.
We got to see who would, or wouldn't, stand to say the US should have Greenland in an even closer arrangement.
A few lines above, you already stated, "we always had the ability to put more bases on Greenland, regardless. So what did that all accomplish?" You just acknowledged that the US could expand facilities in Greenland in any reasonable way we desired.
We made little Denmark look impotent against the US, because it cannot defend Greenland—heck, it even needed Germany, France, Sweden, Norway, Finland, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom to offer troops to “protect” Greenland, because, well, Denmark is nothing.
I have already pointed out in the original reply to which this is an effective response, that Trump was made to look foolish, and forced to conduct a humiliating climbdown.
They will send troops to Greenland, but not to Ukraine, which they all outwardly claim is their biggest bugaboo. Obviously, Ukraine means nothing to the EU.
It is the European nations that are supplying the money for the arms from which America profits in this war. But Trump has converted the United States into a war profiteer while posturing before the world his concern about lost lives.
The EU, with 500 million people, can't begin to tax its people enough to be a pimple on the US's butt, when it comes to defense spending.
I don't think we should confuse all the peoples of Europe with the EU. Clearly Europe has greatly expanded its defense spending across the board. Those are the facts. It is enough to say that it was the policy of the United States to contribute proportionally more to the upkeep of NATO in exchange for domination of multilateral defense policy. It is hypocritical to blame the Europeans for doing exactly what Americans would do under identical circumstances; they let America pay for defense and let Europeans enjoy healthcare. That was a win-win. America got what we paid for and we paid for what we wanted.
all saw how wonderful it was to have non-working criminals from outside the country do the crime citizens just wouldn't do.
Have you heard of a place called Minneapolis, Minnesota?
And you, Nathan Bedford, are strutting around stating the US or Trump is somehow “humiliated.” No, it is not, but Stockholm Syndrome is a real problem with people like yourself.
You just can't let go of the ad hominem, can you?
The succeeding paragraphs containing your sadly revealing comments about "parasites," and further attacks against me personally are unworthy of response accept to say that I am always open to friendship with fellow conservatives because I am not here in any spirit except one of friendship for colleagues who rest their friendship in mutual respect for integrity and rigor. It ain't personal, it's policy.
