Hundreds protest Trump's NATO comments and Greenland demands at US embassy in Copenhagen

Hundreds of Danish protesters, many of whom are military veterans who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan, staged a demonstration in Copenhagen on Saturday outside the U.S. Embassy.

The group was protesting President Donald Trump’s push that the U.S. acquire Greenland from Denmark and his remarks at Davos that NATO forces "stayed a little back" when they fought alongside the U.S. in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"They have a feeling that they’ve been betrayed," Carsten Rasmussen, president of the Danish Veterans Association, told The Associated Press. "And of course, they are angered by this. They deployed. They fought with the Americans. They fought with the Brits. They fought together. They bled together. And as you have heard here in front of the American embassy today, 52 of them never returned."

Forty-four Danish soldiers died in Afghanistan, the highest per capita death toll for a NATO country in the war, and eight more died in Iraq. The population of Denmark as of 2025 was just over 6 million.

During the protest, demonstrators laid 52 flags with the names of the fallen outside the embassy.

"Behind all these flags, there's a guy, there's a soldier, there's a young man," Lt. Col. Niels Christian Koefoed, a Dane who served in Afghanistan, told Reuters.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called Trump’s remarks about staying a "little back" ""insulting and frankly appalling," to which Trump wrote on Truth Social: "The GREAT and very BRAVE soldiers of the United Kingdom will always be with the United States of America!"

He didn’t, however, acknowledge the sacrifices of other NATO troops.

Trump has been able to clearly draw a line demarking the huge differential between what the US has done or endured, versus its allies, for various “world peace” goals.

1. UN payments
2. NATO spending
3. Involvement and losses on basically any war we've had for decades.

No pays as much as the US on all of these, while the damned EU and UK have hundreds of millions more population.

We have Freeper voices that lambaste Trump doing this and “damaging” the relationships with these fraudulent allies (often these are FReepers who have “gone native” in their foreign lands, such as Germany.

The only way any of these lousy countries would ever do something more appropriate to their claimed commitments is to be humiliated and shown for the limp wristed countries they are. Even a recent NATO commander admitted as much.

Everyone wants the US to spend for their wants. It must stop and it must be ridiculed, as should everyone who is seeking back that terrible status quo we had for decades.

I, however, want to see those countries “man up” and tax the absolute snot out of their people to bring themselves to were their “guaranties” should have totaled to, all along.

Only Poland seems to be trying.

All the rest are untrustworthy SOBs, as are the people who defend them.

I prefer bilateral alliance with nations.

NATO made sense during the Cold War.

We should have dismantled it after 1991.

Time to leave NATO.

I'm fine with being allies with Poland.

The EU should take care of the Baltics and Finland. Really it's their "sphere of influence". Not ours.

If they can't handle the responsibility then maybe the Russians will be happy to do it for them.

Relatively irrelevant.

They are Antifa Europe azzholes.
And these guys:
“many of whom are military veterans who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan.”
Can they alone defend Greenland from the CCP?
LOLOLOL!
Dream on Denmark military.
You can’t even defend Denmark.
I hear Antifa Europe is already protesting in Milan ahead of the Olympics which will be riddled with Antifa protests and other assorted dung beetles of humanity.
No one will be watching!

That’s the problem with all these worthless SOBs not wanting to work. All they want to do is sit around on their asses, whine about everything and throw tantrums and molotov cocktails. Real ahos.

Didn’t Trump already sort of walk back on that statement?
He did it last week, after England’s King Charles brought it up in a speech. Apparently, the Danes are not yet ready to let go of their anger on all things Trump.

The descendants of Vikings are whining about the combat deaths of military volunteers. And the Danes wonder why they are not fully respected.

The only way any of these lousy countries would ever do something more appropriate to their claimed commitments is to be humiliated and shown for the limp wristed countries they are.

This Little "lousy, limp wristed" Denmark has made the President of the United States humiliate himself, and his country into the bargain, and climb down on international television from his bellicose threats to invade Greenland.

These little, "limp wristed countries," like Denmark, forced the President of the United States to humiliate himself, and his country into the bargain, and climb down on international television from his intemperate threats to impose tariffs on "little, limp-wristed" countries who opposed his aggression against Greenland.

Mindless Trump bots, myopically afflicted with TSS, ignorant that Trump received nothing more than he was initially entitled to, pepper this forum with fawning adulation for the man whose antics alienated half a billion friends in Europe and needlessly humiliated our country.

Well Denmark, more than happy for the US to pull out of NATO and leave you to German leadership. It worked out so well for you in the 20th century.

Effing Danish Dummies.

Only President Trump’s intentions with Greenland will secure America’s national security. Only America can extract Greenland’s rare earth minerals which will bring great wealth to Greenland’s people. Greenland can ill afford their anemic Danish masters.

Those driving the opposition to Trump’s efforts in Greenland have ulterior motives favorable to China and Russia.

52 military deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan????

US military deaths in Iraq, 3,237.
US military deaths in Afghanistan, 2,249.

US contractor deaths, 7,800.

Wounded US service members, 50,000.

8 Danish soldiers in Iraq and 44 in Afghanistan are a tragedy. But perspective causes many to hold back the tears. I’m glad they found 100 protesters in a country with 6 million residents, of which a quarter of them ( 1.4 million for those in Rio Linda) live in Copenhagen.

That do seem smol, even for such a tiny, baby country. Surprised it rated a story. TDS....

"sphere of influence"

I live in the real world but the phrase "sphere of influence" always seemed a bit like mission creep and justification for many not so nice things.
