As Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasizes national unity, separatist sentiment is gaining renewed attention in more than one part of the country.
In the small central Alberta town of Innisfail, the quiet of Main Street contrasts sharply with the intensity of opinions surrounding the issue.
Jeff Olson, owner of Innisfail Bowling and Entertainment, says he is fully behind separation, arguing Ottawa has long treated Alberta unfairly.
“The job of the West is to keep the East prosperous. They’ve made that very clear,” Olson said.
“We have taxation without representation. It’s getting to a point where the government is spending more money than it’s taking in and driving down the value of the dollar.”
Separatist sentiment has grown louder in recent weeks as the group Stay Free Alberta circulates a petition calling for a referendum on independence.
The group must collect at least 177,732 valid signatures by May 2 before the question can be verified and brought before the Alberta legislature.
Jeffrey Rath, general counsel for Stay Free Alberta, said an independent province would have the ability to dramatically overhaul its tax system.

The amount of tax money taken from Western Provinces, and given to Ontario, the Maritimes, and especially Quebec, in the form of “Equalization Payments” is really quite shocking in per capital terms.
similar to New York City - Quebec’s home-grown leftism, its demands for autonomy, and self-proclaimed rights are funded by welfare and skimming / tax theft from others.
but your insane government is flooding Canada with muslims , Africans , Indians and making the taxpayer pay for it , you can’t mix cultures
Can we trade Alberta for Minneapolis? It’s a win win for both sides.
I guess Archer predicted the future.
“Extraordinary rendition!”
If they really make their deal with China, and then split into two parts, China can gain two separate new provinces before taking over the US if we lose in the midterms and 2028. Nightmare.
Currently China has 23 provinces, but when including all provincial-level divisions (autonomous regions, municipalities, and special administrative regions), there are a total of 34. The PRC administers 22 provinces, while claiming Taiwan as its 23rd.
The 5 autonomous Regions are Guangxi, Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, Tibet and Xinjiang.

Ha.
With a rider “no return to sender allowed for Tim Walz or Jacob Frey.”

You dickheads are leaving out one important point. If Quebec and Alberta are on their own what happens to the rest of them? Ontario can survive on it’s own. Bring the US down to 48 states, a nice round #.
I have an Albertan born daughter-in-law, haven't spoken to her lately and as things are not likely to again. Haughty ass, obnoxious people the Canadians with absolutely no good reason to be. Trump is right. Without The United States Of America there is no Canada.
Apparently it never has dawned on them that other than Mexico, Canada is the only other country in the world lucky to share a border with the US. For me, for this American, Canadians are a right royal pain in the butt.
They could call it “Albertchewan”
They may be paid operatives pretending to be Canadian.
Ironically Bud Grant coached in the CFL before coaching the Vikings, won 4 Grey Cups with Winnepeg.
Ironically, he lost 4 Super Bowls with the Vikings.

With their beady little eyes, and flapping heads so full of lies!
we’ll take ALberta, and France can have Quebec, a very fair division that even Solomon himself would have approved of ...
