Hundreds of students across the Bay Area walked out of their classes Wednesday to protest the recent killings of two people in Minneapolis by federal agents and President Donald Trump’s nationwide immigration crackdown.
The local walkouts — which included a march through the streets of downtown San Jose, along with other walkouts near San Leandro — added to a growing number of protests across the nation following the fatal shooting of ICU nurse Alex Pretti by federal agents over the weekend in Minneapolis. The killing came just weeks after another federal agent fatally shot a mother of three, Renee Good, in the same city.
Holding signs reading “No one is illegal on stolen land,” and “ICE melts in California,” hundreds of Overfelt High School students in San Jose walked out of school Wednesday afternoon, many of them chanting “No ICE! No wall! Free the families, free them all.”
Nearby residents stood outside the front of their homes in shows of support as the walkout proceeded to the intersection of King and Story on San Jose’s east side, with drummers accompanying them. Some attendees waved American or Mexican flags.
Footage from ABC7’s helicopter also showed hundreds of students staging a walkout on Hesperian Boulevard in San Leandro.
Keyontae Slayton, a 16-year-old Overfelt student, said railed against the tactics used by ICE of late, and decried the shooting of Pretti over the weekend.
“What’s happening with ICE right now is not right at all,” Slayton said. “It really is truly, really bad that people are actually accepting this and thinking this is right.”

Propaganda works.
That’s why teachers keep doing it.
Sad but true.
Not surprising at all.
I’m going to stop going to Lizzo concerts to protest ICE.
I’ve always wondered, surely there are students who choose not to participate. Yes,it’s the Bay Area but there has to be 10% that have parents who are critical thinkers. Are these kids now going to be ostracized by the teachers and fellow students?
Most of those kids would accept any excuse to skip school, so long as they didn’t get in trouble.
They don’t even really have to be given a reason.
Kids will do anything to get out of class.
A lot of those San Leandro kids are from middle to lower middle class homes. They don’t benefit academically by missing their lessons. Lazy behavior, lazy thinking skills are being reinforced.
Yep.
Given how bad Bay Area public schools (and their teachers) are, the kids aren’t really missing anything.
Lambs being led to the slaughter by communist elites.
I’m yet to hear students walk out or protest in support of any conservative ideas. It’s like liberalism just inspires hatred of authority.
A podcaster I watch out of TX said that was going to happen at her high-school daughter’s school. She kept her home that day; the school was going to FORCE kids to protest ICE.
Because foreign invaders are worth more than their own countrymen.
Are all these kids illegal aliens?
School attendees’ taking the day off = least persuasive “protest” ever. It’s embarrassing for any adults to act as though this means anything other than that nobody wants to be at the schools to start with.
This is pretty embarrassing to admit but when I was in high school I started a walk-out about the Iraq War.
I was about as un-political as could be, but it was a chance to do something “cool” and look good in front of the other students.
I look back and cringe but I’m sure I’m not the only person who did stupid shit when they were a kid.
Defund their indoctrination.
Reality: students walk out of school to protest ICE, go home play video games
