Happy Australia Day to all our readers Down Under. The national holiday is, in fact, on Tuesday, but for all I know it's already Tuesday there, or possibly Wednesday, in which case Happy Australia Day for yesterday - or, as the depraved nutters at the nation's state broadcaster say, "Happy Invasion Day". As you know, we always like to have an Oz song for Australia Day. The story behind "Waltzing Matilda" is in my book A Song for the Season, and, what with one thing and another, "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport" doesn't seem to get played as often as it used to. So in lieu of those, altogether now:
Do you come from a land Down Under
Where women glow and men plunder?
Good question. Men At Work came from a land Down Under and in January 1983 they were on top of the world: "Down Under" was Number One not only in Oz but also in the United Kingdom and in the United States, and to this day Men At Work are the only Australian band ever to have topped simultaneously both the UK and US singles and albums charts. A lot of the pop songs from that period you'll still hear on the Eighties oldies stations: in America, Men At Work were succeeded at the top of the Hot One Hundred by Toto and "Africa", which is pleasant enough in a bland sort of way; and in Britain they made way in the Number One slot for Kajagoogoo and "Too Shy", and gosh, it's years since my fingers have had cause to type the word "Kajagoogoo" and even then it was as a punchline for a cheap gag. But "Down Under" transcended the passing fancies of the hit parade and became an Australian anthem....

I was just listening this a couple of nights ago. I binge on 80’s music often. As I type this, playing now:

The whole album that “down under” is part of is very good. “Business as Usual” is the albums title. I did not enjoy most 80’s music but I did enjoy that album very much. Check it out if you can.
IMHO.
\m/ If it aint metal its crap \m/
\m/ Death to all but metal \m/
I binge on 80s music too... but have took a more deep dive than most... a lot of us dig for the obscure stuff. New Wave / Dark Wave / Post-punk / Synth-pop / Eurowave / Italian Disco / Goth Rock / Shoegaze / Pop-Rock and a two dozen other names.
Did I mention I love a new music find.
Great song. Stupid video.
There’s a set of CD’s called New Wave Hits of the 80’s that comprises something like 15 CD’s. I haven’t managed to get all of them yet, but they have some really obscure stuff. Every once in a while I check Amazon to see if they have one I don’t have yet.
It’s the 80’s, man, it was par for the course at the time. If anything, the video was tame. Those early years from 1980 to 1983 were crazy. It was a fun time when every unwritten rule was tossed out the window and we never knew what would appear from one week to the next.
Now playing:

Yes, I’m still binging on 80’s music tonight.
(When he’s talking about “waiting for my man tonight” he’s not gay — he’s talking about his DEALER. The song is about the drug culture in Berlin).
ESPN used it for the opening credits when they showed Aussie Rules Football.
Yeah...I tried Vegemite because of that song...not a pleasant experience...
Yeah death to butt metal.
Oh, give me a home amongst the gum trees
With lots of plum trees
A sheep or two and a kangaroo
Clothesline out the front
Veranda out the back
And an old rocking chair
