Trump warns Canada of 100% tariffs if it becomes China's 'drop off port' with new potential trade deal

President Donald Trump threatened on Saturday that he would implement 100% tariffs on Canada if it strikes a deal to become a "drop off port" for China.

"If Governor Carney thinks he is going to make Canada a "drop off port" for China to send goods and products into the United States, he is sorely mistaken. China will eat Canada alive, completely devour it, including the destruction of their businesses, social fabric, and general way of life," Trump wrote on Truth Social.

"If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100% tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the U.S.A.," the president added.

Trump referred to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney as a "governor," echoing comments he made while campaigning for a second term about annexing America’s northern neighbor. He previously used the same term when speaking about Carney’s predecessor, Justin Trudeau.

The US Supreme Court will soon issue a decision regarding whether the executive branch has the authority to issue tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. The lower courts ruled that the power to impose tariffs under IEEPA lies with Congress. Also see Art I, Sec 8 of the United States Constitution.

Should the Supreme Court decide against Trump, he still has other statutes which he can rely upon to impose tariffs. This is with the caveat that the holding in the current matter is narrowly tailored. If, however, the decision is sweeping against the Administration, then there will be billions of dollars which must be returned. Time will tell.

Shouldn’t Trump at least wait for the upcoming SCOTUS ruling on tariffs so he does not have to walk this back should it not be in his favor?

And as much as I hate cheap Chinese goods there really is nothing to replace them in price and volume yet and people must want them else the Chinese would not be so sure of a market.

The 800 pound gorilla in this court case is that no one from congress sent a friend of the court brief complaining that the President is in fact violating congressional intent behind the law. If Mike Johnson and John Thune had sent some sort of a resolution to the court complaining that Trump was being a very bad boy, I think the court would have had the excuse to tie Trump’s hands. In fact I think the congress wants to allow Presidents to have a free hand in supporting the USA’s trade policies. Lots of states and trade officials have tried to tie Trump’s hands thru this case but Congrees has been very silent!

Jeez. The tariffs are great! They beget massive revenues, promote domestic production (jobs) and cause little or no inflation.

I suggest if you like Chinese products so much that you move there and enjoy the CCP lifestyle. When do you leave?

The uptick in tariffs used as political tools is because this SC decision in in the wings. Trump is illustrating that American safety & security is being compromised by foreign actiona and that tariffs are a much better tool than war. The scalpel not the machete.

“You cannot give them Minnesota. Just Minneapolistan.”

***************

Not seeing the rest of Minnesota really applying much pressure to put an end to the mess in Minneapolis. That makes the state kind of an enabler, if not complicit, IMO.
