Two Senate Republicans on Wednesday rallied behind the House-passed Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which would require documentary proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote for federal elections.
The new push comes amid pressure from conservative figures, including Elon Musk, and as the Trump administration pushes states to clean up their voter rolls to eliminate potentially illegal voters ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
Republican Sens. Katie Britt of Alabama and Dave McCormick of Pennsylvania announced they are now cosponsoring the legislation, which was introduced by GOP Sens. Mike Lee of Utah and Rick Scott of Florida, last year.
"Voting is a fundamental right and responsibility that is reserved for U.S. citizens," McCormick said on X. "Since day one, I have always supported protecting our elections from illegal voting and ensuring only American citizens are voting in our elections.
"That’s why I am proud to cosponsor [Mike Lee's] SAVE Act, a commonsense bill that strengthens our election integrity and reinforces existing federal election law," he continued. "The bottom line: Pennsylvanians deserve elections they can trust."

The Republicans better make this become a law—whatever it takes to get it done.
Otherwise I have zero sympathy for them if they get crushed in future elections.
Only two. *Sigh*.
Everyone in gubermint knows a law like this would destroy our democracy! Our gubermint needs two political parties- the DimWITS cannot win elections without undocumented voters.
Please stop this before Trump gets too much power. /sarc
Attach it to a spending bill to shut off Chuckie’s filibuster.

Ok, I have a driver’s license, an expired passport, a US Navy DD-214 and a county voter registration card. I have not seen my birth certificate in years. If I move and have to reregister, will my citizenship be challenged?
The DD214 will have no value. Non citizens serve.
The passport is your best ammo.
It will be a great law. And of course the democrats will oppose it no matter what to protect the illegal voters. But even if citizenship is required, the democrats will oppose districts and SOSs will ignore it and continue giving non citizens voting rights. And once that happens there will be no way to remove non citizen voters.
This Concern is valid. But is anyone concerned that FEC/HAVA funds non-citizens to write the voter and election software. FReepers were concerned about 2020 elections in
GA. But who was concerned that the voter registration software was designed and written in India by non-citizens who did not know the law or customs of GA or the US.
Oh, by the way, they didn’t know much about IT either. Example, the DBA didn’t know the terms Normalized and DeNormalized data. Yet the denormalized data is precisely why problems occurred years prior to 2020 and Gary Cooley was made the scapegoat. The denormalized data is one of the reasons the software did not work as it should in 2020.
I have not seen my birth certificate in years.

Most hospitals allow you to fill out a request form online - you will need drivers license and some other bits I cannot remember. It takes a week or two to arrive.
You will need a valid SS card (has 2 pillars on it), valid BC to get a Real ID or to get a Passport
I do not think the DD214, voter card, or expired Passport will help.
You absolutely need a BC.
I was able to get an official birth certificate sent to me (for a small fee) from the state of California. Could be profitable to check with your state of birth now. Good to have one around.
I got a certified copy of mine from PA when I was in my 60s. No problem. Small fee.
