Trump vows US will have ‘total access’ to Greenland ‘with no end’ under deal, may still acquire island

President Trump said Thursday that the US will receive “total access” to Greenland under the terms of a “framework” deal announced a day earlier at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

“We’re talking about, it’s really being negotiated now, the details of it, but essentially it’s total access,” Trump told Fox Business Network’s “Mornings with Maria.”

“There’s no end, there’s no time limit.”

The president, who also ruled out using military force to annex the world’s largest island Wednesday, stressed that Greenland is critical to national security and will be used for his vaunted space-based Golden Dome missile defense system.

“Everything comes over Greenland. If the bad guys start shooting, it comes over Greenland,” Trump told host Maria Bartiromo. “It’s pretty invaluable. It’s amazing.”

The president has long set his sights on obtaining Greenland for the US, but had stepped up his rhetoric toward Denmark, the current owners of the island, and other European countries in recent weeks.

Earlier this month, Trump threatened to impose 10% tariffs on eight European countries starting Feb. 1 due to frustration with them sending troops to Greenland in an apparent show of defiance toward Washington.

But on Wednesday, following a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, the president called off the tariffs and announced the deal outline was in place.

Details of the framework are still murky, but reports indicate the US would get more control over land hosting US military installations, as well as European agreement to beef up Arctic security.

Pressed about whether the framework means the US will ultimately obtain Greenland, Trump responded: “I don’t know if I can say that. But it could be. It’s possible. Anything is possible.”

Multiple European officials have stressed that the framework leaves Denmark in control of the island.

“Everything comes over Greenland.”

The Chinese could put nuclear missiles in Venezuela.

Could

So you nitpick over his word “ everything” meaning strategic weapons?

Btw the odds of China putting intercontinental missiles in Venezuela…are probably lowering thanks to Trump

OK, just a random thought here.

Why would we ever be interested in a country/island named “GREENland,” when their national flag only has “RED” and “WHITE” for colors?

Kind of seems like it would be a “red flag” (yes, pun intended).

Doesn’t seem like the design was thought through . . .

Perhaps a new law: No motor vehicle of less than 50,000 miles of road use may be vended in the USA if it has more than X pounds of rare earth elements per ton of vehicle weight.

Passing a law is cheaper than paying Greenlanders $1 million each.

Since Congress could change X at any time, China and Europe would have an incentive to ensure US automakers have enough rare earths.

If US available rare earth supply becomes short, the ICE of new hybrids might kick in at 32 mph instead of 50 mph.

If US are earth supply runs out, X might be set to 0 by Congress.

I suspect Caracas is running short of hard currency resources due to oil tanker seizure.

“His “vaunted” Golden Dome”

Are US-made systems totally stopping Iranian-technology drones from hitting Kiev?

So Trump is trying to save face. He didn’t get Greenland and nothing changed.

TACO moment.

We already had all that per the 1951 treaty.

It costs Denmark about $10,000/year/Greenlander to keep Greenland in Denmark’s orbit.

The Greenlanders are going to want more to switch over to the USA.

The problem isn’t pack of access to rare earth deposits. (There are commercially viable deposits in the US, Canada, Australia and a number of other friendly countries.) It’s lack of processing capacity. The Chinese have the the processing capacity. We don’t. We need to address *that*.

Does anyone here see how Trump may just be playing the Greenlanders off against the Danes? Independence is the not-so-big elephant in the room. I’m sure all of them resent their colonizers but they may not be ready to be cut off. Too many failed independent countries out there. Waiting in the wings is the US-the devil they don’t know. The history of colonialism calls for vigilance but Trump’s deal making could suggest something positive could be worked out.

Analogy: American Samoa-an American territory that sits a ferry ride away from Samoa, an independent country. The 2 could and should be one but when it comes to money they know where their bread is buttered. Simply put, they may have just been bought off. Puerto Rico has the same problem-the choice between 3rd worldism or Somali-like dependency. The good news is that Greenlanders would be unlikely to scatter themselves to warmer climates and as for their Danish Haloes? I’d leave.

TACO moment.

So you're saying you WANTED Trump to invade Greenland, and he chickened out?

You're an idiot.

This is the best outcome the US could have had - no boots on the ground, no bullets, no deaths, and we get the land and permission we wanted for our security.

The idea is to CARRY a big stick. It's better if you don't have to actually use it.

We don’t know all the details. I would say this goes beyond that Treaty with iron clad guaranteed agreement that it cannot be revoked.
