Former Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan is outperforming Republican Congressman John James among likely voters in Michigan who “Lean GOP,” according to a new poll on the 2026 governor’s race.
Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, who is overseeing her own election for governor, maintains a majority of Democrats, with 74.2% of those who identified as “Strong Dem” and 52.1% of those who “Lean Dem” backing her campaign.
Duggan, who ditched the Democratic party in December 2024 to run as an Independent, has the support of 19.2% of Michiganders who identify as strong Democrats, 29.2% that lean Democrat, 47.3% of Independents, 43.9% who lean Republican, and 15.5% who identify as strong Republicans.
Of the 600 likely Michigan voters surveyed by the Glengariff Group Jan. 2-6, 20.9% who identified as Independent backed James, as did 35.1% of those who lean Republican, and 79.7% of strong Republicans.
“This is clearly going to be a close race,” Richard Czuba, founder of Glengariff Group, told The Detroit News, which commissioned the poll with WDIV. “And it would be a close race with or without Mike Duggan.”
Overall, James secured the most support among the leading candidates with 34%, followed by Benson with 32%, and Duggan with 26%, though the results are within the poll’s 4 percentage point margin of error. Eight percent told pollsters they’re undecided.
Czuba pointed to a lack of enthusiasm on the Republican side, noting 72% of strong Republicans said they definitely plan to vote, compared to 88% who said the same in January 2024, a decline of 16 points.
Across the aisle, 87% of strong Democrats said they would definitely vote in November, down just 1 percentage point from January 2024.
“That is a huge red flag on the Republican side,” Czuba said. “They have a lot of voters who are not motivated to vote.”
The poll follows another from Rosetta Stone Communications conducted in October that showed Michigan Republicans prefer 2022 Republican gubernatorial nominee Tudor Dixon over James.
“If Tudor Dixon (33%) were to run, she would hold an eight percent lead over James (25%) and (former Michigan Attorney General Mike) Cox (10%),” according to Rosetta Stone. “Clearly, if Dixon were to run, it would change the race for the GOP nomination dramatically.”
The poll found in general election matchups, James would beat Benson and Duggan by five points, while Dixon would win by three.

Duggan wins it running away and he has my vote.
It is anybody's race with those kinds of numbers.
But a high base turnout puts James over the top. With Duggan taking away the swing voters for both sides, this could literally be a victory for whichever party candidate gets a high base turnout. If the turnout of *both* bases is low, Duggan could win.

Elections in Michigan are rigged like Colorado and they don’t want any token Republicans screwing with their rigged elections... even if it is a man of Color. The entire state is ran by riggers.
James has a great shot — as long as 2 Democrats are splitting somewhere around 60% of the vote. Otherwise he’s looking at statewide loss #3.
While James is my congressman, he’s useless. I’d vote for Duggan over James any day.......
Judge the man on his resume. Not his politics. Just like Trump.
He gets an A+ as Mayor of Detroit
Oh yea. Trump gets an A+ also. Just for clarification.
James strikes me as opportunist who has glommed onto Trump to advance his career but doesn’t really share Trump’s vision. IMO, he’s fundamentally an establishment RINO playing the part of a MAGA supporter.
Duggan is also running as an Independent. FYI.
A candidate's politics is a big part of the resume for political office.
All that matters is the politics and how he votes when he gets to DC. Character doesn’t matter so much....a vote is a vote.
Like AZ in 22 the rat SOS is will be the one counting the votes in her race to be Governor. You can bet she will cheat like hell just like Hobbs did.
What does that have to do with a governor's race?
What is so great about Tudor Dixon?
Wow. I never thought of that. Keep trying. You’ve almost convinced me of your argument.
Were did I put my Republican Jersey. It’s around here somewhere 😂🤣
Duggan is more conservative than James, at least more of a pro-business conservative. James has run weak kneed a few times when Trump has controversy and distances himself. I’d lean Duggan over James myself, at this time.
That’s not a response...and you know that.
Have a good rest of your day.
Interesting to see all the support for Duggan
She’s Hot. One issue voter and her position is a loser in Michigan.
