Everything Trump wants to do with Greenland when it comes to America’s security can be done at any time with no hassle. America has already signed such a deal in 1951, and it’s still valid.
There are ZERO problems.
One thing Trump can’t do is to take by force a sovereign territory.
If we accept that, we trash all the principles of Law and Order (a strong conservative value) and we send a signal that Russia can take Alaska and Mexico can retake Texas. It’s madness.
America is a Christian and civilized nation. We don’s steal others homes and lands like the commies do. The respect for borders and peoples belongings is what separates us from terrorists and communists.
That’s why Trump will NEVER attack Greenland. He is a civilized Westerner - Westerners are different from the outlaws : Iran-Russia-North Kora-Russia.
Trump will try to make a deal, with Denmark and Greenland based on legality. Thats all.
Anything else is just noise.

Post WWII, the world decided to end colonialism.
We can’t now suddenly go back to the 1700, 1800, 1900 eras...

I think Trump wants to avoid a situation like The Philippines, down the road.
My guess is that Trump wants a strong military presence and base there, but doesn’t the US to be stuck w/most of the bill, like it is w/the rest of NATO.
Anything Europe stands up there now would only be for show and would evaporate when Trump leaves office in 2032 :)
Any payment from Europe for a US base would also evaporate upon his departure.
Hence, if the US is going to pay for it, we should at least own it.
Maybe it’d suffice just to own everything north of the populated areas.
Not true, FRANCE. Denmark could sell it's colony Greenland over to China anytime it wants, and that would deeply undermine U.S. security. President Trump took and oath to protect the American people. He has to make sure that doesn't happen.

America had countless of bases on Greenland during the first Cold War in order to defend American soil. All those bases could be reinstated at any time, Denmark and Greenland have zero problems with that.
And for some reason that isn’t enough for America, and if he wants Greenlands natural resources... well that is purely an economical reason... and only a thief would take that by force. Republicans are not thieves. We respect Law and Order, and we oppose delinquency.
Thus, only a DEAL can be signed - if BOTH sides are willing to sign it.
There will be nothing else.

Right. That was my point. If reinstated the US pays for it 100%. Trump wants the bill shared. If not shared, which it likely won’t be, the tradeoff is land, which we can buy.

By the way. NATO is a system protecting America AND Europe.
The only time article 5 was invoked... it was by America - after 9/11. Immediately, European allies brought in financial military help to America, troops, and a lot of European blood.
Trump wants to give China and Russia pause should they decide to make a move on Greenland. To make such a move not to be against NATO, but directly against the United States.
