Marketplace plans from the Affordable Care Act no longer feel very affordable to many people, because Congress did not extend a package of enhanced subsidies that expired at the end of 2025. Last week, the House did pass legislation to extend the expired subsidies, and negotiations have moved to the Senate. Without a deal, an estimated 4.8 million will go without coverage this year.
But even without a health plan, people will still need medical care. Many, like the Sorys, have been thinking through their plan B to maintain their health.
The Sorys both lost jobs in November, within days of each other. Robert worked as a farmhand. Emily worked at a staffing firm and lost her insurance along with her position.
“It’s a horrible, horrible market right now. Really tough,” she said.

By design.
Uh oh, now they're in trouble.
My plan for my final year or so before going onto Medicare will be to self insure and pay cash whenever possible. I’d love to get a cheap catastrophic plan with a $20K deductible, but those don’t appear to exist.
The plan I pay for went from $67 to $166.
Let’s imagine that the COVID debacle of the past 6 years never happened, and there wouldn’t have been the irresistible pressure to subsidize ACA insurance plans. Would we be in the same place now?
It was meant as a precursor to single payor. They wanted to move subsidies to 100%.
In my garage, it’s WD-40, shop cloth, and some duct tape.
And 1 of 10 is ER and stitches.
Obamacare was simply another Democrat big-government wealth-transfer, government debt, and theft scheme - designed to steal money from producers, and funnel it through Democrat bureaucracies to Democrat constituents and dependents.
Can the Uniparty GOP at least finally recognize this?
I'm sure that somewhere in the thousands of pages of the ACA, those plans are deemed "illegal."
Be careful of the penalty for not having continuous coverage.
Designed for the stupid.
The Govt plans are topsy tervy, by design. Go to the doctor, almost free or free. Need Meds, free or almost free. No real incentive to get healthy because there is a drug for this or that. Drug companies love Obama care.
But don’t get sick. The deductibles are crippling for most families. This is why you hear stories of families who have insurance, yet are being bankrupted by medical bills.
This is by design. It is designed not to work and for insurance and drug companies to get rich. Folks at almost all income levels will be dissatisfied..........ie the solution is govt run healthcare.
Penalties for no insurance no longer exist thanks to Trump.
But they still make you run through the gauntlet of reporting it on your tax return.
Which is why we kept the Obamamess coverages. Thank goodness that's in our rear view mirror.
Not exactly so.....
You have to be POOR enough to "afford" Obamacare.
No Jobs/ No Health insurance.
Then they go on Welfare.
Imagine if we got rid of all of the Dem Created Minnesota style fraud, theft, and abuse of public funds?
These people could have a real temporary safety net while they got things back together.
But no.
We can’t have nice things because Democrats wreck everything.
Yes, some leftist states charge you for not carrying health insurance.
PENALTY FOR LATE APPLICATION FOR MEDICARE PLAN B STILL EXISTS
Medishare. Luckily I haven’t had to use it but my premiums are not much more than what I had when I just wanted catastrophic coverage. It also covers the membership dues to a concierge medical clinic. Obamacare plans in this state are absolute garbage. And even if you get it subsidized good luck finding any provider that accepts it. AND good luck paying their deductible. How is a 15k deductible affordable? Oh how I despise that purple lipped thin skinned charlatan and the democrat party. And don’t get me started on how miserable he made us all when I lived on Oahu not far from his vacation house. O
