It's really starting to look like Rep. Ro Khanna's push for a California tax on wealth is going to be the biggest own goal in the state's recent history.
As you may recall, this whole thing started with a plan by the SEIU to push a "one-time" 5% tax on about 180 billionaires who live in the state. Gov. Newsom came out against the plan but Rep. Khanna, who represents Silicon Valley, announced he supported it. When it was pointed out to Khanna that some billionaires would leave the state to avoid the retroactive tax, he made a smug joke saying "I will miss them very much."
Peter Thiel is leaving California if we pass a 1% tax on billionaires for 5 years to pay for healthcare for the working class facing steep Medicaid cuts.
I echo what FDR said with sarcasm of economic royalists when they threatened to leave, "I will miss them very much." https://t.co/5N8FxBqJww— Ro Khanna (@RoKhanna) December 27, 2025
One of the people he was talking about missing was Google co-founder Larry Page who had indicated he might move to avoid the wealth tax. Now, it seems that both Page and fellow Google co-founder Sergey Brin have indeed cut ties with California.
Mr. Brin and Mr. Page are cutting some ties with the state where they made their fortunes.
In the 10 days before Christmas, an entity connected to Mr. Brin, 52, terminated or moved 15 California limited liability companies that oversee some of his business interests and investments out of the state, according to documents seen by The New York Times. Seven of the companies — including those that appear to manage one of Mr. Brin’s superyachts and his interest in a private air terminal at San Jose’s international airport — were converted into Nevada entities.
Mr. Brin is joining Mr. Page, 52, in reducing his California presence. More than 45 California limited liability companies associated with Mr. Page filed documents last month to either become inactive or move out of the state, according to state records. A trust with ties to Mr. Page also purchased a $71.9 million mansion in Miami’s Coconut Grove neighborhood this week, according to a deed seen by The Times.
Another entity jointly managed by Mr. Brin and Mr. Page moved out of California and to Nevada on Christmas Eve, according to a filing seen by The Times.
This is on top of other billionaires who have already made the same moves, including Peter Thiel, Larry Ellison and David Sacks. Plus there may be others. Chamath Palihapitiya, a venture capitalist who has been extremely critical of the wealth tax, posted this a few days ago.
People I know, with a collective net worth of $500B, scrambled and left California for good yesterday.
They took no risk because of the proposed asset seizure tax - introduced as a “Billionaire Tax”.
Without these people, the California budget deficit will only get bigger.…— Chamath Palihapitiya (@chamath) January 1, 2026
People I know, with a collective net worth of $500B, scrambled and left California for good yesterday.
They took no risk because of the proposed asset seizure tax - introduced as a “Billionaire Tax”.
Without these people, the California budget deficit will only get bigger.
This hole gets filled in one of two ways: more borrowing from the bond market - who is purely financial and unforgiving or more taxes on everyone else.
Meanwhile waste, fraud and abuse runs rampant from the hundreds of billions in revenues the state already collects.
California's tax system is already extremely progressive, meaning that even without the new wealth tax it relies heavily on the top 1%. So what happens when the top taxpayers simply leave the state and move their companies to Texas or Florida?
Even before the tax has been passed, California has guaranteed that it will have a much smaller tax base next year. So if the wealth tax doesn't pass, the budget shortfall the tax is meant to fix is going to go up.
Who could have seen this coming? The answer is everyone, everyone but Rep. Ro Khanna who thinks having the tax base flee the state is a reason to smirk.

Welcome to Nevada!
Another unregistered foreign agent saboteur.
Said billionaires will throw him a curve.
Btw Google has been perfecting its own AI chips that cost less then NVidias and use less power. These chips are used in Googs data centers and are designed for this purpose. While NVidia AI chips are crazy expensive and are generalist, meaning they can be used for many different AI purposes, data-centers being just one.
Amazon and Microsoft make their own AI chips. Linux Mint does not.
California will end up look like the landscapes in Mad Max #1, but with Chinese people.
“Mr. Khanna”

Government ticks have taken too much blood and have killed the host.
Didn’t these people install Newscum to begin with?
Exactly what I was going to say. This was what they wanted, this is what their money bought… close the gate and lock them in there so they can feel the warmth of collectivism.
"Linux Mint does not."
Common sense would suggest that, over the past 20 years, Page and Brin have paid massive CA state income taxes on the billions in capital gains that they have realized on the sale of GOOGL stock. CA will miss sucking from that teat. Atlas just shrugged...
The Energy Doom loop intensified with the recent refinery shutdowns and pipeline shutdowns which cannot easily be restarted. Thus, the state is going critical not having built another energy base sufficient for its needs.
Californias energy grid is not robust enough for the populations EV and other needs, let enough for the future.
California already has regular brownouts, which is a symptom of poor design.
Look for gas prices to skyrocket and crippling shortages to start.
California will become Energy dependent on foreign sources. States depending on California are finding themselves high and dry as well.
The business and billionaire doom loops are also intensifying, just as it is in New York and other Democrat controlled states. Both are recognizing their compatriots are leaving as it was drips and drabs before. The Democratic State Media, hungry for revenue has not been able to quash the facts and has started reporting on it instead. Building the pressures for others to leave.
Everyone says that Ro is a MODERATE!! LOL!!! He is a PURE EVIL LEFTY!!

If you are doing research, rapidly changing models, or relying heavily on PyTorch and CUDA libraries, Nvidia GPUs are usually the more efficient and practical choice overall.
If you run large, relatively stable TensorFlow/JAX workloads on Google Cloud and can invest in TPU‑specific optimization, TPUs can be more efficient for the same models in both speed and energy/cost metrics.
So sayeth a big, un-named (here), AI online.
There are six states that do not have an income tax.
California just gave these billionaires a reason to move and become a resident of one of those states.
Many will move to Florida.
Some may move to Nevada.
I hope a few will move here to New Hampshire.
I have yet to meet the person building the house across the road from me.
They bought the 27 acres for $750K.
Then did excavation for five months prior to pouring concrete.
Now the house is enclosed and the windows installed.
I assume it is going to be $2Million or more before they are done. Maybe it is one of those California billionaires building a country house. Chump change for them.
@CAgovernor
Looks like the business areas of Kalifornia can be repurposed as housing for the homeless in the near future....
in a direct comparison of Linux mint and windows 11, win 11 does make its own AI chips. In that MS makes its own proprietary AI chips for MS data farms, with windows users in mind, among other factors.
When liberalism reaches it’s limit on cash grab time to bail.
The wording of the proposed law has no lower limit on who will be taxed. Like the income tax, this will be lowered when needed.
This is full-blown communism. Asset seizure.
