UAE restricts funding for studying in Britain over radicalisation fears

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has restricted state funding for its citizens seeking to enrol at UK universities over fears that British campuses are being radicalised by Islamist groups.

The Gulf state has introduced the curbs largely because of concerns over the influence of the Muslim Brotherhood, which it has proscribed as a terrorist organisation. It has excluded British universities, including those ranked among the best-performing in the world, from a list of global academic institutions for which scholarships would be approved and qualifications certified.

Generous grants are given to UAE citizens for overseas study through programmes managed by its ministry of education and ministry of foreign affairs. The funding covers tuition, living stipends, travel and health insurance for high-performing students who are pursuing degrees in priority fields.

When UK officials queried the absence of British universities, they were told it was not an oversight. “The UAE doesn’t want its kids to be radicalised on campus,” one source said.

Since the 2011 Arab Spring uprisings, the UAE has imposed harsh restrictions on domestic Islamist activity and intervened regionally in an effort to limit the role of political Islam.

Last year, The Telegraph revealed eight organisations in the UK had been deemed terrorist groups by the UAE because of their alleged links to the Muslim Brotherhood. The groups ranged from property firms to education and video production companies, with most of their directors or senior figures associated with them listed as Emiratis on Companies House documents.

Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK, has vowed to ban the Muslim Brotherhood if he becomes prime minister. He tweeted on Friday: “Decent Muslim countries cannot believe how weak the UK is on extremism.”

Do I have this right?

A traditionally Muslim country doesn't want to send students to the UK because UK Islam is the insanely fanatical kind?

Man, that’s a twist. Not restricting funding cuz they are learning “western” or “imperialist” ideas but because the schools in Mediocre Britain are filled with radical Islamic terrorists.
