Republican Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (LA-4) brilliantly schooled members of the press, saying that diplomacy with Greenland is part of the Make America Great Again agenda that President Donald Trump promised before he was reelected to the White House. He shut down claims of the U.S. purchasing the island or using the U.S. military to take it.
Speaking to members of the media on Wednesday, Johnson was faced with several questions about talk of the Trump administration possibly buying Greenland or even acquiring it through more alleged forceful actions.
We’re not at war with Greenland,” Johnson said. “We have no intention of being, we have no reason to be at war with Greenland, OK?"
Later, he added, "So, all this stuff about military action and all that. don’t even think that’s a possibility. I don’t think anybody’s seriously considering that. And in the Congress, we’re certainly not.”
“It is an America First priority to look to our strategic and national defense initiatives and what would be advantages to us,” he added. “Greenland offers a lot of that...Obviously, the strategic importance of its geographical placement. But also the rare earth minerals that are there, and everything else."
“ That is directly in line with commitments made on the campaign trail by President Trump and all of us to seek America’s interests first," Johnson continued. “Now that said, does that mean we're going to go send troops into Greenland and take it over? No. I mean, they only have, what, 40, 50 thousand people there. This is not a thing.”
When he was pressed about comments made in the SCIF by Secretary of State Marco Rubio about the U.S. alleged plans to buy Greenland, he pointed out he took it as a joke made among former colleagues …

It was a joke which someone who overheard it took seriously.
“Did Marco say something like that? I think he did,” Johnson said. “I think he did make a comment, but I think he did it with a smile … I took that as a joke. He’s trying to be humorous...Marco did not go into the Gang of Eight and say we’re going to buy Greenland.”
“That’s not what happened...You should not be running with this headline as if it’s some sort of new U.S. policy,” he added. “They wouldn’t have broken it in front of [Senator] Chuck Schumer [(D-NY) ] in the Gang of Eight meeting. Okay?”
It is not surprising that the legacy media would focus solely on the possibility of a military option and ignore the fact that Leavitt said many other options are being looked at, with diplomacy first.
This is art of the deal. You start with an untenable request, and when it’s refused your next offer seems more reasonable.
How Trump can get Greenland — without grabbing it by force

Agreed.
That is what expanding the Overton Window is all about—on any issue.
The further right we expand it the more likely we are to get what we want.
(The virtue signalers and whiners and pearl clutchers around here have obviously never negotiated in the real world.)
I think Trump needs to call for a national Greenland Day and everyone can wear the Viking attire for the day!
LOL!
That wouldn't be any better than Soviet or Nazi expansionism.
So, it would be okay to threat the Democrats with genocide if they don't make a deal to replace Obamacare subsidies with a plan he favors?
There are some threats that are so outrageous, you don't make them.
APRIL 1, 2026 _ (Reuters) _ The Canadian-Greenland allied forces rapidly took over New England and most of New York state and are at the outskirts of New York fighting heavy rush hour traffic. Residents of upstate New York say they are slowly getting used to all the extra k’s and u’s and q’s, and also enjoying the stronger Canadian beer left behind by the occupying forces. Some have even taken up curling and walrus hunting.
We could threaten to force Democrats to bend the knee once a day to honor President Trump.
That will terrorize them for sure!
Lol.
I remember US versus Grenada which was basically US versus Cuba.
It would be the dumbest thing in the world the US took it by force. I really don’t think that would happen.
All bluster?
The Grenada invasion was quite a shock at the time.
The Rubio memes based on that pic have been all kinds of fun!
No, it is Rubio trying to soften/make more palatable Trump's own ridiculous pronouncements on Greenland, and now Johnson sending a very strong public signal that Congress will absolutely not support it.
Essentially, a bunch of sane people who actually support Trump trying to rein him in without setting him off.
RE: Essentially, a bunch of sane people who actually support Trump trying to rein him in…
So, you’re implying that Trump has gone mad??
No, I'm saying that he sometimes shoots off his mouth without thinking through the consequences of what he's saying. Not insane, just very impulsive. And sometimes very unwilling to listen to advice from people that are actually on his side.
