Buy Greenland? Take It? Why? An Old Pact Already Gives Trump a Free Hand
New York Times ^ | 1-7-26 | Jeffrey Gettleman

It was signed in 1951 by the United States and Denmark, which colonized Greenland more than 300 years ago and still controls some of its affairs.

“The U.S. has such a free hand in Greenland that it can pretty much do what it wants,” said Mikkel Runge Olesen, a researcher at the Danish Institute for International Studies in Copenhagen.

“I have a very hard time seeing that the U.S. couldn’t get pretty much everything it wanted,” he said, adding, “if it just asked nicely.”

Ask the for a plebicite. Offer every Greenlander one million dollars upon
Greenland's entry into the United States. Offer them 100 years of tax
untaxed income.

If Greenland’s population want to become part of the US then let them have a referendum. If it’s approved then Denmark should start negotiations. If it fails...the issue is settled.

Yes. Denmark is only administering Greenland on behalf of the US.

Danish politicians act as if they own Greenland.

Greenland does not want to be bought by anyone — especially not the United States. And Denmark does not have the authority to sell it, Dr. Olesen said. “It is impossible,” he said.

LOL. The Donald doesn't understand this word "impossible."

The population of Denmark is 6 million (2025). The population of Greenland is 57,000 (2025). If every citizen of Denmark and Greenland were given $5 million, the cost to purchase Greenland would be a paltry $30,285,000.

Better check that math. You’re missing more than a few zeros.

I cannot think of a faster way to get a Demoncrat House AND Senate at the midterms.

Normal Americans, juggling health insurance increases, exploding electric rates, waitresses, student loans, wanting to buy a house, seniors getting taxed on their Social Security... they all sit in slack jawed amazement as they watch on TV as everyone in Greenland gets a million dollars tax free.

And in return they own a share of a glacier.

Like it or not (and I hate the NYSlimes), the facts of the article are correct.

Current agreements regarding Greenland are enough for whatever military/national security arrangements the U.S. might want to make in or around Greenland.

And financial incentives from the U.S. and other agreements can easily secure mineral rights in Greenland.

Trump has created an issue where likely none existed, until whatever he wants he wants simply by demand.

I always though all we needed to do was ask nicely for some beachfront to construct a base and the Greenlanders would agree. Out-of-town money coming in.

“ She urged the United States “to stop the threats” and said an American attack on Greenland would mean the end of the international world order.”

Please don’t throw us in the briar patch….

One issue in Greenland is that environmentalists are preventing mineral exploration and development.

The Danes are either unable or (more likely) unwilling to do anything about it.

Yup—she must be talking about the “international world order” where formerly white Western countries are over-run with third world immigration.

See post 16.

The New York Times itself already had a long article on the natural resource issue.

Would only have to pay off the Greenlanders. At $1 million per resident that is $57 billion. It is estimated the value of natural resources is $4.4 trillion. Stop funding little Somalia and buy an island.
