Rep. Doug LaMalfa, a fourth generation rice farmer and Republican who for the last 13 years represented much of California’s rural north in Congress, has died. He was 65.
His sudden death, confirmed Tuesday morning by House Republican leadership, further shrinks the party’s already razor-thin majority, which now stands at 218 following Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s resignation this week. The GOP can now only afford to lose two members on any given party-line vote.
While President Donald Trump and House Republicans could consistently count on LaMalfa’s support for conservative priorities such as last year’s mega domestic policy bill, he never adopted the firebrand or antagonist persona that many of his colleagues preferred.
Instead, LaMalfa developed a reputation as a pragmatic and affable member who prioritized water access and forestry management, key interests for his largely forested, fire-prone and agricultural-heavy district. It’s those issues that led him to staunchly oppose Proposition 50, Gov. Gavin Newsom’s redistricting plan that proposed to lump much of the rural north with parts of the far more urban and liberal San Francisco Bay Area.

It always feels weird when they’re younger than me. For most of our lives when someone famous died it was most likely someone older but at some point the odds begin to shift the other way.
I know what you mean, at 76, most of my friends are in their 50’s. That’s because all my other friends have moved on.
I know what you mean. LaMalfa was only a year older than me. The first thing I always think of is that I better go ahead and sign up for Socialist Security even if it means I get less than if I wait. A bird in the hand.
Meanwhile, Republican Rep. Jim Baird of Indiana has narrowly missed being killed in a car accident.
What’s the rule? Once is an accident, twice is a coincidence, three is...? Time to call Candace Owens?
Cause of death?
As far as I’ve heard, no reason has been given. I’ve been listening to our local radio station but nothing so far.
Good thing Johnson has been so aggressive with the legislative agenda in the last year. /s
Pissed away a perfect chance to safeguard the elections and do things about exploding electric and health insurance rates, make social security non-taxable etc.
We are one DC GOP baseball game attack or one car wreck from Hakeem Jeffries as Speaker.

According to an article in the Sacramento Bee, Newsom must announce a special election within two weeks and it should be held no more than 140 days later...so they think he may have it coincide with the California primary on June 2. That election will be for the current district but meanwhile they will be having a primary for the November election based on the new district lines.
Huge loss for we of the First District. He was a dedicated Representative and, as a 3rd generation rice farmer, a true citizen Representative who listened more than he spoke. My wife’s father was his family’s doctor and she babysat he and his two sisters years ago and we attended their “barn parties”.
He was my Rep. also. He came into the sports bar I work at in Yuba City several times. Super nice guy. Very down to earth. Never called attention to himself. Very sad news.

Safe seat?
Not anymore. Navin “I was born a poor black child “ Newscum will probably redraw our district so a Madmani Collectivist will win.
