Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said Sunday that Venezuelans in the U.S. who were previously under temporary protective status (TPS) can apply for asylum.
“Every individual that was under TPS has the opportunity to apply for refugee status and that evaluation will go forward,” Noem told host Gillian Turner on “Fox News Sunday.”
Noem ended TPS earlier this year for roughly 600,000 Venezuelan migrants who received protected status from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) under the Biden administration.
After the U.S. captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, early Saturday morning, Venezuelan migrants in South Florida took to the streets to celebrate.
The long-term future for their country, though, is unclear. President Trump told reporters Saturday that the U.S. “will run [Venezuela] until such time as we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition,” adding that American oil companies will “fix” the South American nation’s petroleum infrastructure.
Venezuela has the largest oil reserves in the world.
Meanwhile, Maduro’s vice president, Delcy Rodríguez, said Saturday in a televised address to Venezuelans “there is only one president in Venezuela and his name is Nicolás Maduro Moros.”
Trump, who said Saturday that Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Rodríguez after the U.S. took Maduro into custody, told The Atlantic’s Michael Scherer on Sunday that if the vice president “doesn’t do what’s right,” she will “pay a very big price, probably bigger than Maduro.”
Rubio told host Kristen Welker on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday that the U.S. must first address the flow of drugs, gangs and sanctioned oil from Venezuela before entrusting the country to new leadership.
“We don’t want to be involved with having somebody else get in and we have the same situation that we had for the last long period of years,” Trump noted Saturday.
Why am I getting the feeling that we’re going to regret this in the long run?
Somebody lost the plot here.
omg.
My first thought.
This is not what we voted for.
Fix Venezuela so we can send them back!
Those Venezuelans voted for Hugo Chaves communism. They should suffer their fate in their own country, damn it.
Get them ALL out! /spit
“Why am I getting the feeling that we’re going to regret this in the long run?”
Good-looking governor, but she was BOUGHT OUT by big business long before going to DC, as we all remember when she double-crossed the Republican base by effectively vetoing the bill that would have kept perverts out of women’s sports...after promising to sign it.
So, no surprise here.
Bwahahaha.
Suckers. You all have been had and never knew it.
There are worse cohorts in the US, cost-wise. /shrug
Will people kindly get a grip.
First, consider the source.
Secondly, they can APPLY.
If there’s an issue, the president will deal with it.
watching the involuntary knee jerk reaction of FRINO’s (freepers in name only) is comical.
It seems like every time the U.S. gets engaged in conflict with another country, we end up taking in hundreds of thousands of their “refugees” and enriching their country.
According to the Dept. of Homeland Security:
"To qualify for refugee status in the United States, individuals must be outside the U.S.
Asylum seekers may apply for protection within the U.S. or at a port of entry, whereas refugee status must be applied for from outside the country.
Watch Noem change "refugee" to "asylum seekers."
These "refugees" should be deported to help rebuild their own country, not parasite off of ours.
TPS was ended, not just for Venezuelans benefitting from that status, but for all, correct?
The author says “earlier this year” but didn’t Noem declare that in 2025?
Refugee status...that can end, administratively, too, right? Short of the U.S. supplying U S. citizenship to the refugee.
Who knows but Venezuela, already wracked by economic devastation, and intimidation by armed civilian thugs, could descend into utter social chaos from this point forward, depending on whether the Maduro-ites decide to crush those who resist them.
Zactly. Sad it took 10 posts to get a sane reply.
Is it though? This shouldn’t even cross the lips of any MAGA supporter EVER. This shouldn’t even be a thought. We don’t want ANYMORE turd worlders in our country
What the....?
She does what her boss wants and tells her to do.
This wasn’t her call.
NO! I did NOT vote for that! Everybody Out!
