Squirming Sir Keir Starmer refused to back or condemn Donald Trump's military action against Venezuela today.
The Prime Minister said he was waiting to 'establish all the facts' after the US captured Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and flew him out of the country in an extraordinary military operation.
When the BBC pressed him on whether he believed the US had broken international law, Sir Keir refused to condemn Trump's actions, reiterating that 'we need to establish the full picture'.
Speaking to BBC presenter Laura Kuenssberg on Saturday, he added: 'I don't shy away from this. I've been a lifelong advocate of international law and the importance of compliance with international law.
'But I want to ensure that I've got all the facts at my disposal, and we haven't got that at the moment, and we need to get that before we come to a decision about the consequences in relation to the actions that have been taken.'
Starmer added that the UK Government will discuss the 'evolving situation' in Venezuela with US counterparts 'in the days ahead' and will 'shed no tears' about the end of Maduro's regime.
The PM also assured that the UK was not involved in 'any way' in airstrikes on military bases in Venezuela and said he had no involvement in the operation that led to the capture of Maduro.
He also said that he wants to speak to Trump to find out more information.
'I want to speak to President Trump. I want to speak to allies. As I say I can be absolutely clear we were not involved in that', he said.

What a lot of people do not realize is that 3/4 of the Cocaine handled by Venezuela was headed for Europe, with only 1/4th US directed.
What also is coming to light is how much Russia has been involved in the Venezuelan situation for several decades. The death count of Cubans killed in Venezuela a few days ago has risen to 34. Apparently no Americans died. A total count of 80 has been given without clarifying the number of RUssians or Chinese who may have died.
Russian FSB guards were serving as personal protection for Maduro. Wagner soldiers were also active in Venezuela. Apparently the vicious behavior used by Russia was being taught to the Venezuelan military, and we will soon be hearing about just how bad the torture and murder of dissenting Venezuelans may have been. A number of Cubans were also involved in this event. Cubans are also fighting along side the Russians against the Ukranians. Maduro had not sent Venezuelans to fight like the Cubans. However, Maduro was supplying shahed military drones to Russia for use against Ukraine by Russia, including a number of civilian targets there. These drones were delivered to Russia in civilian passenger airplanes. Russia was sending other drones and military equipment to Venezuela.
Until I heard about the shipments of war supplies to Venezuela I had been surprised at the size of the explosions visible in night photos of Caracas. Now with the information about military supplies these explosions make sense. In some you can clearly see an initial explosion, and then shortly after a much larger explosion. This would happen as fire from an initial strike then spreads to a large supply of explosive material.
Venezuela had a smaller population than Ukraine, 28+ to 44+ million in 2020. Since then about 8 million people have fled Venezuela, even more than have fled Ukraine. One half to 1 million of them are now in the US. Hunger and even starvation had become the rule in recent years in Venezuela. Many wish to return home, but it will not be safe for them to do so as long as Russians, Wagners, Cubans and Chinese are exercising power within Venezuela. Nor will a rapid redevelopment of Venezuela’s oil facilities be possible until changes are solidified.

I was certainly not trying to deemphasized the importance of this major event of seizing Maduro for trial and destroying quantities of explosives and other military items given to him by Putin. Deaths of significant numbers of Cubans, Russians, and possibly Chinese are certainly of serious interest.
Perhaps I should have spoken of Trump making noise in addition about Colombia and Mexico, as he certainly made plenty of noise about and in Venezuela. I hope he will be able to get that rat’s nest cleaned out soon, so Venezuelan’s can go home, and money can be made for the benefit of all from the great oil wealth available.
