Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker on Friday signed legislation allowing physician-assisted suicide for certain terminally ill patients, making Illinois the 12th state to enact such a law.
The measure, known as the End of Life Options for Terminally Ill Patients Act, or Deb's Law, lets doctors prescribe a lethal dose of drugs that eligible patients may self-administer.
Springfield's State Journal-Register reported that the law takes effect in September.
Under the statute, adults must have a terminal illness expected to result in death within six months, as confirmed by two physicians.
Patients must have the mental capacity to make medical decisions, be informed of all end-of-life care options, and submit both written and oral requests. Requests must be made by the patient and cannot be submitted by a surrogate or proxy.
In a statement released after signing the bill, Pritzker said he was moved by stories from residents facing terminal illness.
"I have been deeply impacted by the stories of Illinoisans or their loved ones that have suffered from a devastating terminal illness," Pritzker said. "Today, Illinois honors their strength and courage by enacting legislation that enables patients faced with debilitating terminal illnesses to make a decision, in consultation with a doctor, that helps them avoid unnecessary pain and suffering at the end of their lives."
Supporters said the law expands patient choice and autonomy.
"Terminally ill individuals living in Illinois will no longer have to agonize about spending their remaining days fearful of a painful death because the full range of end-of-life care options were not available in our state," said Khadine Bennett of the ACLU of Illinois.
Kevin Diaz of Compassion & Choices said the law reflects public support for medical aid in dying and described it as "patient-driven healthcare at all stages of life."

Its time souther IL seceeded into Indiana.
The sooner the better.
Perhaps if they make “assisted” suicide mandatory for the morbidly obese in positions of serious authority I could see some benefit to this law, but fundamentality it’s just another circuit in Illinois’s spiral down the toilet.
And all the plans related to the wealthy contraceptive and “overpopulation” demons and their useful idiots in this world continue to be unabatedly executed ....
“It wasn’t murder. It was assisted suicide”. Perfect for a high crime state.
Now have a choice, murdered on the streets my thugs or murdered by the state.
Call it assisted drive-by suicide.
EC
And, the same “doctors” that cannot tell the difference between a male and a female can be the doctors giving approval … what could possibly go wrong?
You know how when you are in severe pain from say, a treatable gall bladder attack, and the attendant who is always in a big hurry to discourage you from trying to read, hands you a clipboard full of papers to sign before they treat you, and so you just sign wherever they point ?
Now they can just stick that assisted suicide form in the pile in the clipboard too, and get that ball rolling over anyone they please, especially the elderly or indigent, or anyone who owes a debt to the mob or a cartel or who just isn’t popular politically…
Kaiser Klaus, Prince Yuval Hairball Harari, King Bill Gates, Herr George Soros, and the rest of the WEF are happy with this “step forward..” Progress, you know..
“...must have a terminal illness expected to result in death within six months, as confirmed by two physicians.”
Sounds a lot like the current condition of the state. JB et al. are writing the prescriptions daily.
“Our family member’s high quality “end of life” care is a quarter million a year,...”

My wife’s care for 15 months was closer to $400,000. But the issue wasn’t and isn’t a simple black and white decision.
We finally terminated her life under an advanced directive as she had a feeding tube and couldn’t swallow. She couldn’t move or talk and had serious and painful infections requiring medication. Yet her heart and lungs were strong.
It split the family and friends who wanted an end to the pointless suffering and those who based on religous beliefs wanted the care to continue. It was the most difficult choice of my life.
Great, the Dems and governor fat ass can now start advertising another sick demented tourism option for our rapidly failing state. We are now welcoming not only illegal aliens, women seeking late term abortions, parents forcing their children to have gender altering surgeries, criminals who know although they may be arrested they will never go to jail and now anyone who wants kill themselves.
That’s it, the camel’s nose is in the tent more to follow.
I’m sure everyone here would happily assist Pritzker or Johnson with their suicides
