After a delayed vote because of the government shutdown, hundreds of nurses at four UnityPoint hospitals in the Des Moines area are voting this weekend on whether to unionize with Teamsters Local 90—an election being closely watched by non-union nurses across Iowa who are also struggling with understaffing and patient violence.
The postponed UnityPoint vote among 1,776 health care professionals at Blank Children's Hospital, Iowa Lutheran Hospital, Iowa Methodist Medical Center, and Methodist West Hospital has been rescheduled for Sunday, Dec. 7, through Tuesday, Dec. 9.
It's the state's largest private-sector union election ever, according to Teamsters.
"I'm excited. I'm ready to vote," said Belinda Carpenter, a registered nurse in the critical care and emergency departments who works at the three adult hospitals. "I think that nurses are seeing the bad side of what UnityPoint's doing."

I suspect there's a story hiding in there that isn't about union organizing.
Unity Point is a fabian outfit.
The above was in error- as of some date in 2025, the COVID shot at Unity Point is no longer mandatory, but still recommended; the flu vaccination is still mandatory.
Anyone previously terminated remains terminated. :<)
I’m not sure I would like being under the care of a teamsters nurse: “It’s time for youse to take youse pills.”
Unions have destroyed American manufacturing, so they have been looking for other occupations that make money that they can parasite from. Nurses is a no-brainer.
Things to remember on a union vote. If you think you are a less than average worker, the union brings your income up to the average. You should be pro-union. If you are a good worker, the union brings your income down to the average. You should be anti-union.
Nurses hold more power than some think.
A rock music reminder.
I think her authorizing physician was “Dr. Pepper.”
I’d like to see that old meme of the weakly smiling old lady in the hospital bed and her daughter coming in with Obama, dressed in white coat and stethoscope.
“Mother, this is Dr. Obama. He’s taking over all the decisions in your case now.”
Nurses unionized four of the six main hospitals in Western MA.
Three have shut down. One is being sold.
The union nurses can make $77 an hour for an extra shift. And they got 7.5% increase this year. Everyone else in the hospital I worked at got no raises.
Yeah…have at it nurses. Everyone loves you. Have a ball.
Every person who wants to vote for a nurses union needs to spend a few days as a manager making real life decisions with real life consequences to their actions, to understand why the nurses are treated so “badly”. Then they can come up with real constructive ideas for improvement. Instead of voting for a bully organization to represent them.
If the unions control the hospital, the hospital management may have to choose bankruptcy over operating the institution as the union demands will push an already distressed (OSHA, LABOR, CMS, lawsuits, Medicare payments, etc) hospital over the financial brink. Seen it happen.
IMHO
When nurses can set their own working days, like teachers, and have actual defined pensions WITH health benefits at retirement, which most hospital nurses don’t have, and in general have the same benefits that other community service workers have..cops,teachers,firemen,then there would be no need for union organizing.
nurses voting for unionization are usually working for terrible management and working conditions are abysmal as is the level of patient care ... it’s all even WORSE AFTER unionization ...
Local ABC news here in the DC area did a series of reports on patient violence. Most of it occurred in the ambulance and at the ER, but a surprising number happened in the hospital. Serious injuries and deaths happened. Most of the perps were criminals, homeless, other mentally ill, and dementia patients, but several just came out of the blue. The many of the later seemed to be having some kind of drug reaction.
