The campaign to make Richard Nixon great again
NBC News ^ | November 29, 2025 | By Tyler Kingkade and Ben Kamisar

During a segment on HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher” in August, activist Christopher Rufo astonished the studio audience when he said the Watergate scandal that toppled President Richard Nixon “was a setup from start to finish.”

Maher muttered, “Oh, geez,” to which Rufo replied with a grin and a prediction: “Nixon vindication by 2035.”

The Watergate scandal has long been viewed as a defining moment in presidential corruption and accountability, prompting a series of government transparency reforms and influencing generations of journalists. It became a shorthand comparison for political scandal and lent the omnipresent “-gate” suffix to many that followed.

But those lessons are now being flipped by some of the most influential right-wing figures, including people known to have President Donald Trump’s ear, who insist that Watergate was actually an underhanded scheme by the “deep state” and the press to take down a popular Republican president.

The Nixon Foundation, which gave Trump an Architect of Peace Award last month, has welcomed the newfound interest in dismantling the mainstream narrative around Watergate. On social media, the organization has amplified examples of popular pundits defending Nixon. It recently published a video featuring podcast host Michael Knowles describing him as “the first president taken down by the deep state.”

Nixon was framed. The Left was working with the enemy to defeat our forces in Vietnam and they knew that as long as Nixon was president, the NVA would never win. Consider the defeat of the NVA Easter Offensive in 1972 in which Nixon kept his promise and bombed them into defeat while aiding the South Vietnamese.

They had to get him out.

Watergate was a Deep State op from the beginning - and at least Nixon was allowed to live.

Nope. The Watergate scandal is the moment the media believed it was their influence that took a Republican out of the WH and they've had their mouths wet to repeat their days of glory.

Deep state media control was possible when there were two newspapers and three TV stations.

Had it been known that the whole story was created and promoted by the Deputy Director of the FBI, and that the “crusading reporters” simply took dictation, it might have turned out differently.

Does anyone know if Howard Baker had an intel connection?

I adored that man and sat through every minute of the hearing, furious with the Democrats. “Will” became my favorite book with a treasured place in my purse for ages. I bought multiple copies as gifts for friends. When Nixon resigned, I cried. One of the traits I most loved in Nixon also belongs to Trump - the ability to totally surprise his enemies, and a willingness to be seen as off the wall to accomplish what he needed to get done. Respect for Nixon who focused on his end goals for this country.

But even more for Trump, who never stopped fighting back against the Democratic crazies until he won over all of them to retake the White House. May he make it thru the next 3 years.

E, Howard Hunt (CIA) was one of the “plumbers.”

Was he connected to the Kennedy assassination? Grok took a while on that and provided 9 paragraphs by way of response. “...there is no smoking gun proving a connection.”

If nothing else, it’d make a good movie.

Just another steal by democrats. Nixon was a decent guy. I think perhaps wrong about taking us off the gold standard, but I always thought Watergate was a hoax.

He took us off the gold standard. Many of the boomers for just starting out in life at that time. He is responsible for beginning the downslide of America. Of course, Lyndon Johnston started the great society but Nixon compounded the problem by printing money to afford it.
He will never be great in my eyes.

Nixon should not have resigned (20-20 hindsight).

Little did he know, the end of Oval Office shame was only 20 years away with Clinton and his cigars.

Then Obama’s spying on the Trump campaign made Watergate look comically trivial.

Nixon had just won a massive landslide, unlike the those two America-haters.

It was a setup. Nixon wanted out on Vietnam, and campaigned on it.
Deep state and the Democrats took him out. They just took him out differently than they did JFK. Same end point.

I disliked Nixon’s Price Controls, his EPA, and his abandonment of the Gold Standard. Those were not conservative actions, and he deserves the criticism he gets from that.

But Nixon loved his country, which is far more than can be said of some Presidents beginning with Bill Clinton onward.

And I will always, always be grateful for him for Linebacker II and the mining of Haiphong Harbor. So I give him full credit there.
