Americans have grown sour on one of the longtime key ingredients of the American dream.
Almost two-thirds of registered voters say that a four-year college degree isn’t worth the cost, according to a new NBC News poll, a dramatic decline over the last decade.
Just 33% agree a four-year college degree is “worth the cost because people have a better chance to get a good job and earn more money over their lifetime,” while 63% agree more with the concept that it’s “not worth the cost because people often graduate without specific job skills and with a large amount of debt to pay off.”
In 2017, U.S. adults surveyed were virtually split on the question — 49% said a degree was worth the cost and 47% said it wasn’t. When CNBC asked the same question in 2013 as part of its All American Economic Survey, 53% said a degree was worth it and 40% said it was not.
The 20-point decline over the last 12 years among those who say a degree is worth it — from 53% in 2013 to 33% now — is reflected across virtually every demographic group. But the shift in sentiment is especially striking among Republicans.
In 2013, 55% of Republicans called a college degree worth it, while 38% said it wasn’t worth it. In the new poll, just 22% of Republicans say the four-year degree is worth it, while 74% say it’s not.
Democrats have seen a significant shift too, but not to the same extent — a decline from 61% who said a degree was worth it in 2013 to 47% this year.
Remarkably, less than half of voters with college degrees see those degrees as worth the cost: 46% now, down from 63% in 2013.

All you get now is Chinese Communist Party/islamic training and indoctrination
For many degrees at many colleges and universities, the cost isn’t worth the benefit.
When you work for yourself, nobody ever asks what degree you have.
That’s great
Kids spend too much on college
The colleges are not at all to blame S/. Obama gave them access to tens to hundreds of $thousands of per student no questions asked directly from the government IRS extracted funds. They jacked up the tuition price to way above the rate of inflation
Kids got hated for it
Illegal immigrants and H1B ers took the jobs
Now the people were leaving the country to have given up on education
Check the salaries of the Deans. Check how the admin has grown in personnel where with computers this should have decreased
Yep, with all the liberal “professors” and administrators living high on the hog on that gravy train.
College is for doctors, pharmacists, lawyers and engineers.
Liberal arts degrees are for few bookworms and research oriented people.
Most people attending colleges now should not do it!
Especially if you get in some good trade, like plumber of electrician.
When you work for yourself, nobody ever asks what degree you have.
You mean a 4-year, $200,000 degree in African or Gender Studies doesn’t guarantee a high-paying job?
Gaining knowledge is always useful
on the other hand, going into deep debt to study the dark fantasy of Neo-marxism is the stupidest thing a young person could do.
It largely depends on the intended career. I studied business on Mama’s knee, and have made more money than most who paid to study it in college. No debts, either. Barring foreign conquest I will probably never need to submit to a job interview.
When I have teenagers to advise I’ll tell them life’s challenging enough without borrowing $100k+ for a piece of wall art (diploma) from a left-wing indoctrination camp.
But the world needs doctors too, so ymmv.
Less a question of attitudes changing, more a question of the colleges changing. And there was a period in between when the colleges were coasting on their reputations while being hollowed out.
It works for getting a DEI job in government or an NGO.
I would argue that most Americans couldn’t figure out a return on investment if they had to. LOL
A 4 year degree is quite valuable. But it doesn’t take the place of dedication, hard work, and continued learning.
Of course, the HR algorithms use undergrad degrees as filters. The MBA has taken the place of the BS in Business. It has all become rather inflated. HR has ruined everything.
“You mean a 4-year, $200,000 degree in African or Gender Studies doesn’t guarantee a high-paying job?”
probably not, but what about an advanced degree in Underwater Basket Weaving? ... probably could get a job as a barista at starbucks or a picker or driver for amazon ...
Or becoming Mayor of NYC (Mamdani has a degree in African Studies).
“HR has ruined everything.”
I liked it better when it was the Personnel Department.
But, to be fair, many of the jobs requiring degrees or advanced degrees are due to Supreme Court rulings on hiring practices.
It’s not a waste if the student knows what he or she is going to do and that is something that is lucrative. Degrees in things like law, medicine, engineering, and accounting are still things that produce great income once one acquires the degree. There are too many people who go to college basically to mark time and have fun who will not profit from the education that is often mostly indoctrination.
No one has called me about whether I think a college degree is worth it but if they did I would say NO! YES, fifty one percent of my feelings are because of costs. The remaining 49% is that even in Texas State Universities, including Texas A & M and UT Austin campus’s have fallen completely under the control of far left socialist America haters. I believe much of the people contacted in this subject poll feel the same way and as per usual FAR LEFT SOCIALIST LOVING nbc never mentioned lefty professors and school managers.
Yeah, they send you off to college
Try to gain a little knowledge
But all you want to do is learn how to score
