The federal government has reopened following President Trump’s signing of a bipartisan spending package passed by Congress. The action ends the longest government shutdown in U.S. history.
Last night, the House of Representatives voted 222 to 209 to give final approval to the funding measure. The Senate began clearing the way on Monday, when eight Senate Democrats crossed party lines in a vote that opened the door for the government to resume operations. Their votes came with a promise from Senate leadership to allow a future vote on extending Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies—which currently reimburse insurance plans that include elective abortion.
“For weeks, a majority of Democratic lawmakers were willing to keep the federal government closed in order to protect federal funding streams that benefit abortionists,” said Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life. “During that time, federal employees went without pay, SNAP benefits were halted, and essential services were disrupted.”
Tobias continued, “The vast majority of Americans oppose having their tax dollars used to pay for abortions. Yet many Democrats were willing to disrupt our economy, keep food from families, and leave our transportation system uncertain—all to prioritize the interests of the abortion industry over the needs of the American people.”
Last week, National Right to Life sent a letter to every member of Congress reiterating strong opposition to any extension of ACA subsidies unless Hyde-like protections are restored. Unlike longstanding federal healthcare programs, the ACA was structured to circumvent the traditional Hyde Amendment protections that prevent taxpayer funds from subsidizing abortion. For more than four decades, Hyde protections have represented a durable, bipartisan agreement: taxpayer dollars should not be used to pay for or promote elective abortion.

The suspense is killing me. Please say it!
They just have to kill the babies.
So the mostly unconstitutional and, thus, illegal and corrupt federal gov’t comes to life again to coerce you and take your money? We’re better off with it shut down.
Except for the military, America and the American People NEED most of the rest of the federal gov’t to be shut down - PERMANENTLY!!!
MAGA with MORE freedom and LESS gov’t!!
LESS gov’t, MORE prosperity!!!
The ACA was supposed to be a independently funded and not cutting into additional the taxpayer funds. This was its promise, and its lie.

So the government shutdown was really about murdering babies?
Tobias continued, “The vast majority of Americans oppose having their [16th Amendment-facilitated] tax dollars used to pay for abortions. Yet many Democrats were willing to disrupt our economy, keep food from families, and leave our transportation system uncertain—all to prioritize the interests of the abortion industry over the needs of the American people.”
There! Fixed it.
Sorry for my tunnel vision, but what really needs to be "aborted" is the ill-conceived 16th and 17th Amendments (16&17A), direct taxes and popular vote for federal senators respectively.
Regarding 16&17A, consider that post-17A crook federal lawmakers discovered long ago that they could promise voters who did not understand the fed's constitutionally limited powers every unconstitutional federal social spending under the sun, funding for abortions for example, to get themselves elected. Constitutionally naïve voters eventually took the bait and not only elected these snake oil politicians, but reelected them too!
Then once in office, in addition to confirming compromised justices nominated by likewise compromised presidents, crook federal lawmakers began to abuse their 16A power by simply fulfilling their campaign promises for federal spending, unjustifiably raising taxes to pay for the constitutionally indefensible spending programs that they had promised to clueless voters on the campaign trail.
Regarding patriots roaring to repeal 16&17A, Trump's red tsunami of supporters, evidenced by his record-breaking win in 2024 elections, need to preserve his legacy by primarying all state and federal popularly elected officials who refuse to publicly promise to support a resolution to propose an amendment to the states to repeal 16&17A in January 2027.
In fact, consider that a resolution to repeal 16A was introduced as recently as 2021, but was unsurprisingly ignored.
We'll call the repeal amendment Trump's Boston Tea Party II Amendment.
Once unconstitutional federal taxing and spending is stopped, the states will ultimately find a tsunami of new revenues that they probably won't know what to do with imo, healthcare, including taking care of the poor, and education, on the short list of priorities.
