Climate talks start with call for faster action and more togetherness, but without the US

BELEM, Brazil (AP) — U.N. climate negotiations were expected to begin Monday at a meeting on the edge of the Brazilian Amazon, with leaders pushing for urgency, cooperation and acceleration after more than 30 years fighting to curb global warming by drastically reducing the carbon pollution that causes it.

André Corrêa do Lago, president of this year’s conference, known as COP30, emphasized that negotiators engage in “mutirão,” a Brazilian word derived from an Indigenous word that refers to a group uniting to work on a shared task.

Complicating the calls for togetherness is the United States. The Trump administration did not send high-level negotiators to the talks and is withdrawing for the second time from the 10-year-old Paris Agreement, which is being celebrated as a partial achievement here in Belem.

President Donald Trump’s actions damage the fight against climate change, former U.S. Special Envoy for Climate Todd Stern said.

“It’s a good thing that they are not sending anyone. It wasn’t going to be constructive if they did,” he said.

The Nature Conservancy chief scientist Katharine Hayhoe compared the negotiations to a potluck dinner.

“The United States as a country will not be showing up with a dish,” Hayhoe said. However, she and several others including former lead American negotiators are pointing to U.S. cities, states and businesses that they said will take up the slack.

The President sees the fraud because he sees things from industry, not fringe.

They don’t demand “togetherness” from India and China, the biggest CO2 producers of all nations on earth (not that producing CO2 is a bad thing)...

The climate thieves and scam artists don’t need American dollars either. Let the foreigners clean up their own mess.

I think the USA in comparison to China and India is the only one that has a serious EPA, all the others are without and have yet to develop the necessary infrastructure.
Correct me if I’m wrong...

--- "togetherness, but without the US"

Sounds fine to me. Let the ones who want to be 'together' simply be together. Misery loves company. Two bucks that the infighting for who gets what in terms of money will make a nifty schism or more among them in no time flat.

Your post really got to the point of it.

Communist China is not a friend. They are an enemy, and they have been waging multifaceted war on us for decades.

I can just see this scam:

COMMUNIST CHINA: We want everyone to work on global warming, reducing CO2 emissions, all that stuff. You guys all get together and work it out.

COP30 MEMBERS: Great to hear! You will be participating then?

COMMUNIST CHINA: Of course! We will support everything you decide and agree with it.

COP30 MEMBERS: Wow...you folks are so different from the selfish Americans. Will you be at the meeting?

COMMUNIST CHINA: Yes, we will send representatives. But keep in mind we need special dispensations for our country, as we have many mouths to feed, so cutting back on our industry will not be easy for us to do. But you go ahead and plan things out. We support your efforts, especially if you can entice everyone to work against the climate-denying United States!

The Communists laugh at all this as an inside joke in the CCP.

and without China and Russia and India.

China and India and Russia may have representatives in those talks, but the rules don’t apply to them, since they always ignore them.

“I am not sure that you can successfully run a scam without a patsy.”

They still haven’t completely destroyed Germany yet although the damage is severe to their economy and former industrial might. Maybe after this meeting, Germany can demand its population take only shallow breaths. Just enough not to pass out.

This paragraph alone almost made me puke.

to curb global warming by drastically reducing the carbon pollution that causes it.

There is virtually no CO₂ in the atmosphere.
