Newsom blasts 'pathetic' Democrats for 'surrendering' to Trump as 'gang of eight' senators join Republicans to end longest government shutdown in US history

California Governor Gavin Newsom slammed 'pathetic' Democrats who joined their GOP rivals to strike a late-night deal that could end the longest government shutdown in US history.

Republicans in the Senate were joined by seven Democrats and one Independent on Sunday night to vote on a stopgap measure which would allow government funding to resume until late January.

The breakthrough deal to end the 40-day government impasse overcame its first major hurdle with a 60-40 Senate vote at about 11pm. The House will convene on Monday and send the bill to President Donald Trump's desk.

The shutdown has left 42 million Americans with no access to their SNAP benefits, forced airlines to cancel thousands of flights and left more than a million federal workers without an income.

Although some Democrats applauded the breakthrough, Newsom was among vocal critics to instantly hit out at his colleagues for caving to Republican demands.

'Pathetic. America deserves better,' Newsom said. 'This isn’t a deal. It’s a surrender. Don’t bend the knee!'

California Democrat Ro Khanna demanded Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer stand down after the betrayal by rogue Dems.

'Senator Schumer is no longer effective and should be replaced,' Khanna wrote after the vote. 'If you can’t lead the fight to stop healthcare premiums from skyrocketing for Americans, what will you fight for?'

The seven Democrats and one Independent who caucused with the GOP were: Dick Durbin of Illinois, Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada, Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire, Tim Kaine of Virginia, Jacky Rosen of Nevada and Angus King (I) of Maine.

'I never thought that shutting down the government… was leverage against the Republicans, and that was proven to be the case,' Senator King told CNN.

Good news.

There is a severe fight going on in the Democratic Party.

May those who are closer to reality win in the end.

Yeah well I don’t like the spineless RINOs who made this deal necessary. So Newsome and I are on the same side of this issue. It’s a uniparty compromise. The taxpayer loses.

The distrust of Democrats is well earned.

Lots of Republicans too. President Trump, and Trumpians have earned trust, exactly the opposite.

So, people who were blaming Trump for the shutdown are now angry with the Democrats who ended the shutdown? It doesn’t make any sense!

Not good news if what I read is true. Trump layoffs are reversed and he can’t do it again. Pathetic capitulation. Veto this crap. The senate works to thwart Trump while appearing to be on his side and Trump doesn’t really know how to put real pressure on the Senate after 5 years

I think this has a lot to do with air travel concerns over the holidays. It was more than SNAP. The air travel chaos was the tipping point. The Democrats will say anything, but the truth is, only those not in jeopardy of reelection woes are the ones who helped out. The others feel the strain, but they dare not say so, or they might lose their luxury status as Senators.

Sounds like Newscome is trying to take over the Democrat Party, like Trump took over the RNC.

Your state is a gross cesspool and people continue to flee to greener pastures. Fix your state and then start criticizing others….
