Tim Davie has resigned as the director general of the BBC following criticism that a Panorama documentary misled viewers by editing a speech by US President Donald Trump.
Deborah Turness, the corporation's head of News, has also stepped down from her role over the issue.
Davie had held the top job for five years, but had recently faced increasing pressure over a series of missteps and allegations of bias.
The Telegraph published details of a leaked internal BBC memo on Monday that suggested the Panorama programme edited two parts of Trump's speech together so he appeared to explicitly encourage the Capitol Hill riots of January 2021.
Announcing his resignation on Sunday evening, Davie said: "Like all public organisations, the BBC is not perfect, and we must always be open, transparent and accountable.
"While not being the only reason, the current debate around BBC News has understandably contributed to my decision.
"Overall the BBC is delivering well, but there have been some mistakes made and as director general I have to take ultimate responsibility."
In his speech in Washington DC on 6 January 2021, Trump said: "We're going to walk down to the Capitol, and we're going to cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women."
However, in the Panorama edit he was shown saying: "We're going to walk down to the Capitol... and I'll be there with you. And we fight. We fight like hell."
The two sections of the speech that were edited together were more than 50 minutes apart.
The publication of the internal memo sparked criticism of the BBC, including from the White House, which described the corporation as "100% fake news" and a "propaganda machine".

Wow. Good. But who is replacing him?
They just fired the head waiter on the Titanic
Aye, there’s the rub.
He talks like he had nothing to do with it. Mistakes were made and some people did something...
This is good news.
Maybe the BBC will be just a bit more careful with their propaganda.
It is a start...
In addition, seize any equipment until they pay every penny of the fines for illegal political contributions-in-kind.
Good! I had a feeling there would be blood spilt at the BBC when I read about this last week. I’m wondering if Trumps Team behind the scenes was threatening them with legal avenues and this was an agreement of sorts. Can Trump sue them monetarily??
I think they've already settled.
Ten million dollars to Trump's Presidential Library.
“However, in the Panorama edit he was shown saying: “We’re going to walk down to the Capitol... and I’ll be there with you. And we fight. We fight like hell.”
The two sections of the speech that were edited together were more than 50 minutes apart”
How did they think this would go unchallenged, and without repercussions? These two clowns should have fallen on their swords, but no doubt there is lower levels of management rot at the BBC and they approved this editing.
What was the DNC payoff to the BCC to get them to do this? The US and the whole world dodged a terrible bullet when Harris/Walz got their asses handed to them by American citizens. Just chew on where we’d be today if they’d “won”.
The BBC has dug its own grave. No sympathy for them.
“ How did they think this would go unchallenged, and without repercussions?”
Would they not think this? The event did happen almost 5 years ago.
IIRC, the Trumps have successfully sued foreign entities for this nonsense. IDK if true.
Right. I think it was in 6th grade when we learned the difference between active and passive statements. He passive weeniness is an effort to minimize his own bad acts.
The news report, however, aired in October 2024.
The airdate, not the event date, was the timing predicate to these dismissals
(As noted in the reports about this)
So Trump was just a drop in the bucket of the BBC's lying. Note how the article cleans up the mess with words like "Bias" Sorry it's much more sinister than "Bias"
It’s called “lying”.
Well if they fired him before the Titanic sailed good for him. If they fired him after the ship sailed, no big deal.
“It’s called “lying”
Yep, and the perps probably already have their slam dunk hiring interviews set up at Oxford / Cambridge.
