Donald Trump has exempted Hungary from sanctions the US has placed on top Russian oil producers as he met Viktor Orbán, the country’s prime minister, at the White House on Friday.
The US president’s decision will be a huge relief for Orbán, a fellow rightwing populist, who had been angling for a reprieve after Trump imposed sanctions on Lukoil and Rosneft last month out of frustration with Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s reluctance to offer concessions for a peace deal in Ukraine.
A White House official confirmed the exemption for Hungary on Friday evening, adding it would last one year.
Trump and Orbán held talks at the White House after plans for a summit in Budapest, Hungary’s capital, between the US and Russian presidents fell apart, dashing Washington’s hopes of advancing its plans to broker a settlement in Ukraine. But Trump said there was a “very good chance” such a summit in the city could occur.
Trump opened the door to sanctions relief for Hungary over Russian oil at the start of the meeting.
“It’s very difficult for [Hungary] to get the oil and gas from other areas,” he said. “They don’t have the advantage of having sea . . . They don’t have the ports. They have a difficult problem.”
Later at the Hungarian embassy, Orbán said his country had received “full exemption” from sanctions on Russian oil moving through two key pipelines. “There are no sanctions that would restrict or make more expensive the supplies coming from there to Hungary. This is a general and unconditional exemption.”
Orbán added his country had also reached an agreement on nuclear co-operation with the US.
The first step will be to purchase nuclear fuel from Westinghouse,” the prime minister said.

Trump never met a dictator he didn’t like or accomodate.
NeverTrump POS.
Lukoil and Rosneft are currently and effectively being sanctioned by Ukrainian drone attacks. Trump’s actions will be rendered moot by Russia’s growing inability to produce or transport gas to anyone, including themselves.
Fine by me. Viktor is one of the few good ones and he deserves our support. The EU weenies are out to destroy him.
Cry harder globalist douche
There’s no pest like a Budapest.
There was a time in our history when we accepted the connection with tyrants who were, for want of a better phrase, our kind of tyrants—there’s the famous FDR line that one was a sonovab*tch but he was our sonovab*tch. The way the world is today, the enemy of communism and the enemy of Islam is my friend, even if he isn’t George Washington.

LOL! CNN lies didn’t even last a day:
“Hungary has won a “general, indefinite exemption” on purchases of Russian oil and natural gas via two main pipelines, Orban told reporters after a bilateral lunch with Trump on Friday.”
Not a year. 😂😂😂 😁
CNN lied [shocked face] and said it was a one-year exemption. Nope.
“Hungary has won a “general, indefinite exemption” on purchases of Russian oil and natural gas via two main pipelines, Orban told reporters after a bilateral lunch with Trump on Friday.”
Now Hungary needs to talk to Zelensky if he wants to keep those pipelines open.
Which means that Trump’s sanctions against Russia are meaningless. All Putin and his pals have to do is to just say nice things about him and he’ll give them what they want.
Zelensky should shut them down.
I never met a Snake that Didn't Lie.
President Trump has done more for the United States in a year than the entire State Department for the last 20 years.
Bearly believeable...
Agree.
I will be surprised if he doesn’t. I’m surprised he hasn’t already.
The 80th sanctions package, or the 120th sanctions package?...
LOL! Little Zelya doesn't have enough troops to defend the western border.
And he'll have even less after Pokrovsk and Kupiansk...
He doesn’t have to. Hungary’s not going to do anything.
