Trump calls for ending Senate filibuster as shutdown clears 1-month mark

President Donald Trump urged the Senate to end the filibuster as a means of ending the government shutdown and breaking deadlock on some of his key policy issues.

The government shut down in early October after the Senate failed to approve a continuing resolution with 60 votes. Ending the filibuster would lower the procedural threshold for the chamber to pass bills to a simple majority.

"Terminate the filibuster, not just for the shutdown but for everything else," he posted on Truth Social. "We will get all of our common sense policies approved (Voter ID anyone?) and Make America Great Again!"

"Remembers, the Democrats will do it immediately as soon as they get the chance," he added.

First, such stunning success, Mr. President!

Second, the Senate GOP should consider either suspending or eliminating the filibuster for routine budget bills. The Democrats have created another destructive precedent that needs to be addressed. https://t.co/eeq4RY7r8i— Mark R. Levin (@marklevinshow) October 31, 2025

Good point. But here’s the thing. Today’s Democrats aren’t your grandfather’s Democrats. Today’s Democrats are a shameless and radical bunch.

I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if they would get rid of the filibuster, regardless.

Just something to think about.

Republican forbearance won’t prevent the Democrats from throwing out the filibuster rule. They voted to do just that in 2022 and were blocked only by the unwillingness of Manchin and Sinema to go along with it. Both Manchin and Sinema were subsequently forced out their party and out of the senate.
Senate Republicans refusing to do what their Democratic colleagues have, to a man, already voted to do is entirely self defeating. There’s no point to any of this. It’s just the institutionalist instincts of men up there like McConnell who are unwilling to recognize that what the Democrats acorss from them have become.

no, no, no. Do not get rid of the filibuster. it’s a weapon that can be used when the Dems get back into power.

I guess you haven’t been paying much attention to what the Democrats have been saying for some time — that is, if they win the Senate, they will kill the filibuster rule.

Getting rid of the filibuster allows the GOP Establishment to more completely fulfill its mission of surrender to the Democrat party more rapidly in future presidencies/congresses.

We need the filibuster to protect us from the republicans in the future. No way we can get rid of it. Trump is being too short sighted with this.

Trump is not the last president, Trump is not the last president under the -R- label.

I don’t care what the Democrats are saying.

The biggest threat we face is the GOP Establishment.

End the filibuster! It’s an obsolete dinosaur used by the testicular liberals to screw over the American people.

I don’t understand. For you folks arguing against this “because it’s our only weapon if the dems return to power.”

Don’t you folks realize that agenda item #1 is taking the filibuster and breaking it in half over their knees because they start enacting their dictatorial oligarchy?

I’m generally opposed to doing away with the filibuster under normal circumstances. These are not normal circumstances and these are not normal times. So our hand is forced.

Just something to think about.

The Democrat/Communists have threatened the filibuster for several years now. Schumer and friends are salivating for the simple majority-Senate
to fill 11 Supreme Court Justices, and to enable the State of Puerto Rico.
