Police received calls from passengers on board the service at about 19:40, alerting them to the incident The train then made an unscheduled stop at Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, where armed officers and emergency services rushed to the platform

At about 21:45, the mayor of Cambridgeshire announced that two people had been arrested and were in custody - Cambridgeshire Police later confirmed this

Information is really being tightly controlled. Guessing that means the perps and the motive fit the pattern we’re all familiar with.

According to the article, the attack lasted 10 or 15 minutes and the scene was horrific. The police initially gave the attack a Plato designation, which is their codeword for terrorism, but then they rescinded it. They do currently have anti-terrorism agents assigned to the situation.

Naturally no one on the train was armed. The only weapon the passengers had was a Jack Daniels whiskey bottle according to one witness.

Of course neither BBC nor the government know the motive. This is another knife running amuck, and it is notoriously hard to interpret knife motivations. But clearly the UK needs stronger knife regulation.

My understanding is that the Plato code is for large-scale, fast-moving terrorist attacks. It does not apply to single-location terrorist attacks that are quickly contained.

Declaring Plato instantly brings in the national counter-terror framework: joint command centers, special-forces liaisons, air support, and crisis communications. Once it’s clear the attack isn’t spreading or linked to a broader network, the code is rescinded to avoid tying up those national resources unnecessarily.
