58,000 UC students could go hungry amid SNAP funding confusion

The University of California is warning that about 58,000 students may see delays in their November CalFresh food benefits as the federal government shutdown disrupts funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP.

In a statement shared with SFGATE on Friday, a UC Office of the President spokesperson said they are working to coordinate an emergency response with campuses and local partners.

A 2024 report from the nonpartisan California Policy Lab found that about one-third of UC undergraduates were eligible for CalFresh, while on 22% of those eligible received benefits in fall 2019.

“Students shouldn’t have to worry about whether or not they can afford their next meal,” Genie Kim, director of student mental health and well-being at UC Office of the President, said in a news release. “These estimates show that we have a lot of work to do in order to improve access and connect more eligible students to CalFresh benefits.”

Able bodied college students getting SNAP? Ugh. We live in a government dependent nation.

So what? I worked my way through 14+ years of college, lived on $200 a month, worked nights, weekends, and holidays. If I could do it, they can do it.

P.S. I should not be forced to pay for their education, and if I am free to decide, I will not. I paid for my education. They can pay for theirs.

Well it has been Nov 1st on the East coast for seven hours now. I have seen no reports of bodies piling up due to starvation death. I can’t even find any evidence of burning Krogers due to looting and rioting. What the heck?

Correct hunger can be a great motivator.

Rice, beans and potatoes are cheap.

It’s CalFresh, not TexFresh, or FlorFresh, or TennFresh. We didn’t vote to fund this. California socialists did. Pay for it yourselves. Better yet, the colleges can pay from their endowments.

This just shows how fungible federal dollars are. They go to everything, to hell with the intent.

The Democrat party is the party of the elite and the government dependent. The more government dependent, the more democrat voters. It is ridiculous.

Bring pot of water to boil. Add noodles. Boil for three minutes. Add seasoning. Serve. You’ve just survived being a penniless college kid.

Maybe UC should offer a free meal plan.

Ever hear of ramen noodles? If you are what you eat, I would have turned into a ramen noodle during college. Besides how can students qualify for food stamps anyway?

"Students shouldn’t have to worry about whether or not they can afford their next meal"

If they're on SNAP apparently they can't afford their next meal anyway. Why is that anyone's problem but their own?

College students have long scammed the system like this, but it’s wrong. They should get a job, then go to college part-time as they can, if they’re that broke—rather than soak taxpayers.

I was a poor college student and survived on noodles and butter and popcorn and soda pop. Also the parents of the students who came from good families—their moms and grannys would cook stuff and bring it hot to them. But that is not what we are talking about is it? We are talking about fraud.
