Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the country's military to launch "powerful" airstrikes on Gaza on Tuesday, imperiling the fragile U.S.-brokered ceasefire.
"Following security consultations, Prime Minister Netanyahu instructed the military echelon to carry out powerful strikes in the Gaza Strip immediately," his office said in a statement.
An IDF official said the command is a result of Hamas allegedly attacking soldiers in Rafah in an Israeli-controlled area. NBC News has not independently verified this attack. The official would not confirm if airstrikes would be launched Tuesday night. The U.S. State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the move.
Airstrikes were reported by Al Jazeera in east Deir al-Balah and the center of the Gaza Strip on Tuesday night local time.
Earlier, Netanyahu said that the remains of a hostage returned by Hamas overnight were body parts of another hostage who was recovered in Gaza by Israeli troops almost two years ago.
Under the truce agreed on Oct. 10, Hamas is expected to return all Israeli hostage remains as soon as possible.
Netanyahu's instructions come just weeks after Israel and Hamas agreed to the ceasefire. The deal saw the exchange of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners and detainees, and prompted high hopes that fighting between the two sides would end.
Hopefully they now know all the hamass hiding locations
is Bibi going to let IDF get the job done this time or is he gonna just again shuffle things around, drop a few bombs on empty buildings, and proclaim victory like he always does? the IDF needs to be unleased to win, all this playing patsy with Fakestinian terrorist murder gangsters is ridiculous
Who really thought Hamas was going to honor the terms of the ceasefire and disarm?
I wonder what is really going on here. Yes, Hamas violated the terms of the ceasefire. But they did so to blow up the ceasefire. Netanyahu knows this and now is a willing participant. He had some goodwill on his side. He may have now lost it. And I say this as someone who was all for Israel’s military strikes previously.
What ceasefire? Hamas started executing locals a few days after agreeing to the ceasefire. No one in their right mind believed Hamas would honor the ceasefire. As long as Israel exists, Hamas will continue the killing, and evidently it matters little if they are Israelis or their own people. They cannot exist in the absence of terror and fear.
Trump stopped him from finishing the job.
“ Trump stopped him from finishing the job”
How so? Exactly?
I think turning the cheek once or twice might be indicated.
If things get hot, the deal is history.
It was only Israel that abided by the ceasefire. Hamas ignored it.
It’s never a good idea to trust Hamas, or any other Muslim terrorist group.
NBC fake news always putting "allegedly" in regards to their Hamas buddies, sick of that.
What ceasefire, other than returning the live hostages they have done NOTHING..they refuse to disarm, they refuse to leave Gaza, they are killing any Palestinean who they believe cooperated with Israel..and now they are playing games with the dead hostages returning remains of a hostage that they already gave back 2 yrs ago so enough is enough with the games..destroy these pieces of filth once and for all
About time, this time finish it quickly so nobody can interfere, including us.
Its been two years, Hamas is ALWAYS going to exist, its an ideology not a group..you cant kill everyone in Gaza
Good. Now go all out and wipe Hamas off the face of the earth.
understood.
a very very very unfortunate thing, hopefully will be corrected ASAP
By withdrawing support...and no doubt some threats made privately.
What’s the problem? Trump got the hostages back (what’s left of them), established himself as peacemaker, got Arab countries to rally around him and each other and even Israel, then Hamas (as everyone knew they would) broke the truce/ceasefire, and now Trump will let Israel finish off Hamas.
HAMAS does try to maintain a monopoly on thuggery in Gaza, but they are not the only thugs in Gaza.
Israeli responses to thuggery should be carefully limited to the actual perps.
The return of the bones may have been done in good faith.
