Lawmakers move to extend Russia’s compulsory military draft to a year-round process

Russian lawmakers Tuesday endorsed a bill mandating year-round military conscription, rather than just in the spring and fall, as authorities seek to fill the ranks as fighting in Ukraine grinds through a fourth year.

The legislation, which was approved by the lower house, the State Duma, in a third and final reading of the measure, turns conscription into a permanent process.

Once the bill is vetted by the upper house and signed into law by President Vladimir Putin, it would allow conscription offices to summon draftees for medical exams and other procedures at any time of the year.

The bill’s authors say the measure is intended to ease pressure on military conscription offices and streamline their activities, which includes performing the physicals and assigning conscripts to various military branches.

Ah, but think of the possibilities. What if the US re-did the draft and started with every guy who had ever put an Antifa emoji/etc, or palestinian/mehican flag on any WWW message? EVAR!

It is my understanding that Russia doesn’t send conscripts into the Ukraine war.

What Russia might do is to send conscripts through training, then discharge them.

They could then enlist as volunteers for the Ukraine War.

Re: "Russian law makers"

The Associated Press has decided that Russia is a Constitutional Republic that debates and legislates new policy.

No mention of the fact that Vladimir Putin - plus a Putin clone - have been President of Russia for the last 25 years!

Technically, Medvedev was President for part of that. But, Putin has been either President or Prime Minister for the last 25 years, with whichever office Putin holds having the real power.

But your point is absolutely valid, which is why the pro-Russian mob that refers to Zelensky as a dictator really needs to look in the mirror.

“As of 2025, the Russian Army has approximately 1.32 million active soldiers. This number has seen recent increases, with reports indicating that the total number of personnel, including reserves, could reach 2.3 million.”

Not only is Russia winning, Russia may be looking to expand into other areas. That’s a lot of soldiers.

People, read the article carefully. And you might want to supplement your reading with the wiki for Russian conscription.

They have universal conscription and have since the early 2000s. Just like Switzerland and several other countries.

They have done their annual conscription in Spring and Fall. This brings in young men, who flood the medical exams at those points in time, to prepare for their 1 year of military training, at the end of which they either enlist (sign contract for longer duration) or they are moved to the reserves and return to civilian life. This has always been this way, long before the war.

What this new legislation does is allows the medical exams or orders to training to be year round. They aren’t increasing the conscription numbers. They are stretching them out. For the Spring event young men may get their notice to report for a medical a month or two or three later. Not immediately, thereby avoiding them flood the med exams in a very short period of time.

This legislation does not make the two conscription events year long. There is no change to that process. It will be what it has been for over 20 yrs.

"As of 2025, the Russian Army has approximately 1.32 million active soldiers.

That is very misleading, if not outright false. The term "soldiers" generally refers to those in the Ground Forces/Army, or in a stretch would include Naval Infantry/Marines.

But that 1.32 million figures includes those in the Russian Navy, the Russian Aerospace Forces, and the Strategic Rocket Forces. Of that total of 1.32 million, less than half are actually in the Army itself.

The problem is logistical support and of course, Armour. They don’t have a modern tank force, Air Force, or control of the air. You can put as many ground troops into the front as possible, but with today’s battlefield, it’s WWI all over again.

No Russian ruler has done more to destroy Russia than Putin. That will be his legacy.

Putin says, 'my soldiers are dying too fast!"

So, he's mandating that troops have to be recruited on a daily basis, for the meat-grinder know as Ukraine.

Zelensky is having to build millions more Uke 'soldiers', known as killer drones.

The drones are waiting, Putin. Send your meat, because the meat-grinder is ready.

You understand wrong. Russian conscripts are being sent into the meat-grinder. Russia doesn't have the luxury anymore of keeping the conscripts at the ready. Those conscripts are ready the minute they're found.

With around 1.5 million casualties, and thousands more every week, Putin knows that he's got no choice but to send every man that can be found, into certain death. The hope is that, Ukraine will get tired of killing so many Russians and will surrender.

Not quite what you think...

For the rest of the story: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c620765wlxgo

Even as Russia troops outnumber Ukrainian troops by 8 to 1, the battle for Pokrovsk continues.

Not only is Russia winning,

estimates by military experts are that, in order for Russia to win, it's going to take them 230 years, and over 100 million Russian dead soldiers. So, no Russian victory likely this century or the next or even after.

Russia may be looking to expand into other areas.

The moon might be easier to take, but then, other countries will get there first.

That’s a lot of soldiers.

Soldiers will not win the war, or the next.

Russia is at war now. So, the way things used to be for over 20 years, is no longer applicable.
