Italy approves extradition to Germany of Ukrainian suspect in North Stream pipeline explosions

An Italian appeals court on Tuesday approved the extradition to Germany of a Ukrainian man arrested last month on suspicion of setting off explosions that damaged North Stream gas pipelines between Russia and Germany.

The suspect, Serhii Kuznietsov, has opposed the extradition and his lawyer, Nicola Canestrini, said he is appealing the decision by an appeals court in Bologna to Italy’s highest Cassation Court. Any transfer will be delayed until a high court decision, expected in about a month, the lawyer said.

German prosecutors allege that Kuznietsov both organized and carried off the detonation of at least four bombs of between 14 kilograms and 27 kilograms (around 31 pounds to 62 pounds) at a depth of 70 to 80 meters (230 feet to 263 feet) in the Baltic Sea near the Danish island of Bornholm on Sept. 26, 2022, according to the extradition papers.

The Italian appeals court refused the defense’s argument that Kuznietsov enjoyed “functional immunity” because he allegedly carried out the attack under military orders, saying the German extradition request did not address his military role, according to court documents. It also noted that the sabotage occurred out of the war theater.

German prosecutors have given few details of their investigation, but said two years ago they found traces of undersea explosives in samples taken from a yacht that was searched as part of the probe.

The yacht left the German island of Ruegen on Sept. 8 with a skipper, four divers and one explosives expert along with Kuznietsov, and returned on Sept. 22, four days before the explosions. Kutznietsov returned to Ukraine by car, according to court documents.

Does it say he is currently in Italian custody? Why did he go back to Italy to get arrested after he had fled back to Ukraine? To avoid being drafted?

Serhii Kuznietsov is a Uke Nazi saboteur, not a tourist.

He returned to Ukraine after the Nord Stream sabotage.

After the sabotage uproar died down, he went to Italy on a new assignment, figuring he was in the clear.

He got caught by the Italians who took him into custody on warrant Germany issued in the meantime.

He ain't gettin' out of Italian custody without the Italian Supreme Court opposing the Italian and German Interpol Agencies.

The big hole in the whole BS story is that a mere rented yacht was able to carry the divers, the explosives, and all the gear and air tanks needed to plant explosives at multiple points 180 feet below the surface of the ocean

So we’re to believe it was some random Ukrainian guy. No details on bosses, motive, accomplices, support, background methods etc.

Just some Ukrainian - with the Italians.

This looks like a European version of Richard Jewell, the security guard who was wrongfully blamed for the Atlanta Olympics bombing of 1996. In the case of Jewell, the authorities wanted a white heterosexual male to blame for the bombing. In this case, they found a random Ukrainian to blame. The Baltic Sea is a NATO lake with all countries, except for a small portion of Russia, being NATO members. It stretches credulity to believe that the takedown of the Nordstream pipeline occurred without the knowledge and permission of NATO member states.

Are they passing this guy around Europe hoping he’ll get lost in the shuffle, and disappear?

What you believe doesn't matter.

It's what the Italian and German Interpol Agencies believe and what the Italian Supreme Court Justices believe that matters.

It appears that the Italians and Germans agree that Serhii Kuznietsov is guilty and the only nations that will have possession of him are Italy and Germany.

"It appears that the Italians and Germans agree that Serhii Kuznietsov is guilty and the only nations that will have possession of him are Italy and Germany."

That's probably because they're afraid that if they turn him over to Ukraine where he's from, he'll be set free.
