A woman has been arrested for abandoning her newborn daughter on a rush hour subway platform at Penn Station in Midtown Manhattan, police said Wednesday.

Assa Diawara, 30, was nabbed late Tuesday for allegedly leaving the infant at the foot of a staircase on the downtown No. 1 train platform at the 34th St.-Penn Station stop about 9 a.m. Monday. The baby is her daughter, police sources said.

NYPD detectives conducting an exhaustive search of surveillance footage in Midtown captured images of Diawara bringing the newborn into Penn Station and then leaving without her, the sources said.

Surveillance video showed Diawara getting into a Cadillac livery cab to Jamaica, Queens, where she was dropped off. Cops canvassed that area and a neighbor recognized her from the surveillance footage and directed police to her home.

...

Commuters found the baby alone on the subway steps moments later and called the police.

Medics took the newborn, whose umbilical cord was still attached, to Bellevue Hospital where she was in good health and undergoing an evaluation.

Maybe the women could be charged with failure to properly dispose of an unwanted child thru approved effective means to end the life of a human person, with failure to do so resulting in a charge of endangering the life of a child that she could have legally murdered by mifepristone or misoprostol or "medical" personnel.

Most any reason will do:

I like the idea of baby boxes that women can leave their newborns so that a quick response can be given for the care of the newborn.

Agreed. Then do a DNA test of the baby and find the egg donor and sperm donor and force them to pay child support to whatever foster family or orphanage raises the kid.

Hard to get a quicker response than Penn Station at rush hour.

Yes. That would be great šŸ‘šŸ»

Luckily, the baby has been saved this time - but in the future, maybe there won’t happen to be a good Samaritan around.

In Massachusetts, anyone can leave a newborn at a police or fire station, no questions asked. They will put out an appeal for the mother to contact authorities, but there are no criminal consequences, and no pursuit. I believe the older custom was to leave them in a church. Say what you will, the mother did not throw the child in the trash or into a river.

Then do a DNA test of the baby and find the egg donor and sperm donor...

That would kinda defeat the whole anonymous surrender thing.
No one would ever use it.

I'm trying to fix the larger problem -- too many "unplanned" pregnancies. If the people making the baby are the ones experiencing the natural consequences of their actions, there will be less oops pregnancies to argue about what to do with. (Exhibit A: the reduction in birth rates during the Great Depression when a lot of people were too poor to raise kids, and there was no abortion industry or welfare industry to dump them onto someone else. Somehow they figured out how to make less babies even with less education and way fewer birth control options than we have now.)

But as long as there exists the options for abortion and dropping a baby off for someone else to take care of, and taxpayers providing the welfare for the kids --- then the oops parents don't experience the natural consequences of their actions and, therefore, they don't learn to quit making that mistake. Nor do their friends learn it vicariously. That leads us to plenty more oops pregnancies in the future.

Probably the best thing that could have happened to the kid, maybe now it will have a chance at a real life without a crazy mother.

Good point. There is also possibility of post partum depression or psychosis. Cause dropping off a baby with umbilical cord still attached sounds very desperate and/or deranged. I have seen PPD first hand and the moms are crazy.

The US fertility rate is so low that we will be losing population in the next ten years. This is especially true with the reduction in illegal immigration to zero and the increasing deportation of the unlawfully present.

If Trump wins on the birthright citizenship issue, the population decline will be even faster. The median age of US women is like 39. There is no baby boom on the horizon.

Unintended pregnancies are at an all time low. Also, unintended does not mean unwanted.

Keep in mind that the original post to this thread is about a baby drop box.

Women give wanted children up for adoption all the time. It’s why they choose adoption over abortion.

I don’t know this woman’s story. Is she an illegal that didn’t know she could take the baby to a fire station or hospital for anonymous surrender?

Is she from a culture that would kill her or the child or both for an out of wedlock birth. Is the father a violent monster and she thought her baby was safer with strangers.

Does she have PPD or PPP.

What I see in the contrast between the two photos provided is that life has not been treating her well.
