The truth: When the Ukrainian people rose up against Putin's attempt to turn Ukraine into a puppet state, after which he invaded Donbas and held a mock referendum. Fighting then broke out between legitimate Ukrainian forces attempting to restore order and Russian backed militants from the ethnic Russian minority. The results included unintended civilian casualties on both sides, casualties that fell off drastically after 2016.
