Russia Uses Precision Drones to Attack Ukraine's Rail Network

They are part of Russia's broader targeting of infrastructure that now is being carried out with greater precision thanks to advances in long-range drone technology that include onboard video feed.

In the attack in Shostka, less than 70 kilometers (43 miles) from the Russian border, two explosives-laden drones struck two commuter trains in quick succession.

Russia has stepped up railway attacks over the past three months, seeking to sow unrest in Ukrainian regions it borders by depriving people there of rail connections, Oleksandr Pertsovskyi, the CEO of the Ukrainian state railway, told The Associated Press.

“What happens is not just about the quantity, it’s also the approach of enemy forces. Now, as they have very precise Shahed drones, they are targeting individual locomotives,” Pertsovskyi said.

Since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion in early 2022, railway officials have publicly reported about roughly one attack on railways per week.

Since mid-summer of this year, that rate has more than doubled to about two or three per week, according to an AP review of public reports.

However, what is publicly reported is only a small fraction of the overall number of attacks on all rail-related infrastructure, which could include damage to power lines, electrical substation, rail tracks, train stations and other structures.

Russian forces have added a key upgrade to their drone fleet since the summer, according to Serhii Beskrestnov, a Ukrainian military and drone expert whose team studies intercepted Russian drones.

Cameras and radio modems, which send and receive data wirelessly, have been fitted to various types of long-range strike drones. That allows operators to adjust a drone’s flight path in real time, sharply increasing precision compared to preprogrammed models.

My reaction, like the recent stories about Russians attacking the electrical grid, is: haven’t they been doing this for the last 2 years, at least?

Russia’s precision drones are cheap and are also being used to take out Ukraine’s highly priced heavy artillery and armored vehicles.

It looks like Russia invading a neighboring country and that country fighting for its life against the Russian and North Korean forces.

Russia out numbers the Ukraine 10 to one and no gain time to back off it’s a money and body pit.

Russia has advanced drone warfare and so has the Ukes.

LTE modems and cams means if you jam 4G LTE you jam to your own comms and datalinks sim cards are cheap and cloneable too. Commercial grade encryption is hard enough to break, put a mil grade encrypted stream inside a commercial stream and there is virtually no way to break it certainly not in real time. Patch antennas looking up with phased array null beams means ground jamming of GLONASS or now that Russia has Chinese chips the much superior BeiDou system is available with five frequency bands for BeiDou and three for GLONASS it becomes nearly impossible to jam them all and with phased array you have to be in the beam path to the sats not under the UAV.

https://www.kyivpost.com/post/58619

Russia is also fielding at least two types of relay drones that loiter at altitude miles back from the FPV drones again so phased array null based antennas can be used to point a beam away from a ground based jammer. One is their new Ku band and soon to be C band sat comm package it’s small at 8kg and 35cm aperture size tied to the medium drone relay base station which also could be a eNodeB which is the physical link for the LTE network a 18kg node can handle 1000 users at once and the 5kg size does 100 users easily small enough for a medium UAV to carry. This loitering 5000 meters would have line of sight of 252.5 kilometers (about 157 miles) meaning they could loiter them well inside Russian airspace and inside their SAM protection dome. LTE normally has range limit from it’s node but more than one company has uses software on the base node side to connect to ordinary LTE phones from as far as orbit. Starlink direct to cell is the Premier example of this tech. Lynk has demonstrated using a microcube based sat as a LTE node from orbit to do 2G,3G and 4G to ordinary LTE phones it would be super easy to put that software on a drone at altitude. AST SpaceMobile is doing full 5G from space to ordinary phones they tested it already from Midland Texas. China is launching a 30,000 sat Starlink clone and you can bet Russia will get access to it. The other loitering drone relay is fiber optic based it has a 60-100km cable length so it too can stay inside protected airspace.

China and Iran both are sending EM warfare immune hardware. This means microwave weapons and janmers are no good.

Anti drone bullets are becoming a thing they work against slow quad copter FPV drones but would be useless against a pusher prop fast AI targeting drone those can hit 400 mph impact speeds with prop fans or if using a micro turbine like a RC jet supersonic is possible no way a human has the reaction time to hit a pusher drone on terminal dash dive.

https://www.businessinsider.com/rifle-bullet-fpv-anti-drones-ukraine-war-unjammable-nato-2025-7

The US Army is getting Israeli smart AI scopes that track and only let fly the round when the instantaneous impact point of the round and the drone are the same it’s millisecond capable as the IIP moves faster than a human can compensate for. The user hits the target select button probably thumb based and the AI locks on then they pull the trigger but the weapon doesn’t go off until the IIP and the target meet up the sight is giving video prompts to move the rifle in the direction it needs too so the IIP and the target meet.

https://www.foxnews.com/us/u-s-army-deploys-cutting-edge-13m-smart-rifle-scopes-automatically-shoot-down-enemy-drones-combat

This SMART sight works the other way too you can mount a pistol or rifle on a moving drone and it will track and compute the IIP for a target on the ground and only let the drone rifle fire when the IIP and the target meet it’s 90% first time hits on moving targets from the ground up in testing and nearly 100% from a moving drone down to even a running speed human sized target. This is the future of combat.

He is a 25 year dictator and many think that his life and death depends on him remaining in control, and this invasion debacle is jeopardizing that control because of what it has resulted in for Russia.
