Automated border checks start in Europe

From Sunday, non-EU travelers entering Europe’s Schengen open-borders zone will be photographed and fingerprinted at border crossings, as the European Union rolls out its much-delayed automated border checks.

The aim of the new system is to eventually replace the manual stamp on passports and secure better information-sharing between the bloc’s 27 states.

The border-check system will allow authorities to know when people entered and exited a country, with the goal of better detecting anyone overstaying and people refused entry. […]

Non-EU nationals arriving for short stays in EU countries — except Cyprus and Ireland — will be asked for their passport number, to provide fingerprints and have their photo taken at automated kiosks.

The same requirements will apply in Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway — members of the European Economic Area including the EU — and Switzerland. …

“The aim of the new system is to eventually replace the manual stamp on passports”

Modern government utterly -ruins- every fun thing in the world. Also my new passport made my photo into some fuzzy digitalized thing. Sucks.

They don’t even bother stamping the passport anymore. I’ve been through a few borders where they simply look at it & hand it back to you. Yes, I wanted those stamps on there. It is kind of fun.

Your photo is out there for the world to see since it is on your passport. But, I will never return to Europe if my fingerprints are required.

There is absolutely no reason to fingerprint a tourist. You already have enough data.

If you think this is limited to non-Schengen visitors you would be mistaken: Europe has been moving to biometric ID’s and passports for several years. A Schengen citizen must scan his passport and present fingers to a finger-print scanner. Facial recognition and fingerprint software are used for a match against the ID.

I only have one finger available, sorry. Want to know which one?

There is, will be, a carve out for any Islamofascistnazi. Any EU border staff who attempts to approach or confront any islamofascistnazi will be forced to attend the EU Re-education Camps, to “get their “mind right.”

The US government has my passport photo, my fingerprints from a security clearance, and my SS#.

It might have the fingerprints my elementary school collected.

The USA fingerprints before issuing a tourist visa the EU is just finally getting around to the reciprocity agreements with the USA. Only VWP countries don’t get fingerprints but face ID is always a requirement.

This is already being done in the US. I came through Atlanta last month. There is a kiosk that does a facial scan and you’re done. No passport, no passport booths.

The Gov has your DNA if you served after 1990 in the military they take two glass capillary tubes worth in boot and two drops into a dual chamber card wells. CODIS holds all service members DNA as well.

IDENT A KID in the 80’s was fingerprints only by the late 90s they were also taking cheek swabs for that program. If you have ever been arrested then booking got yours fingerprints and they are in database as well. If it was a felony arrest they cheek swab automatically have since the 00s. Ever had a CHL or FOID yup those print cards they were in IAFIS they are now in NGI.Ever had a CDL , there is a federal requirement for a full fingerprint background check. All those prints end up in NGI too.

If you are a Clear pass member the first thing they do is face picture, then iris scan then retina scan, plus thumb and index fingers both hands. When you go to the line you just put a finger print down and look into the eye scanner it then let’s you pass. Global entry and precheck both require prints and face scans NEXUS adds in iris scans too. Every border crossing every where has or is going to biometrics as they should every nation’s has a duty to its citizens to know who is crossing its borders.

Uh the EU fingerprints refugees and asylum seekers including kids. If you hold dual nationality the EU doesn’t print you they already have them when you were issued your EU member nation passport.

Correct you scan passport and use a thumb or index finger it’s already on file with your member nation and thus in the EU EES database already. No need for new scans you are just proving that the person holding that pass port is the person it was issued too. Not a big deal the USA also does this at entry in the terminal scan passport scan a print smile for the face recognition. If you grew a huge beard from when your passport photo was taken it will throw a agent come over flag trust me....

Sorry I wasn't clear: I just didn't want Americans not familiar with Schengen to think the Orwellian facial recognition stuff was reserved for foreigners.

And yes, the US entry system has also moved over to biometric as well.

Of course, if you show up in a burqa you'd probably get waved right in.

My fingerprints are sitting in an FBI or DoD database. I worked for the Army as a civilian employee during High School.
You’re not alone.

What they should do and what they actually do are two different things. I live along the southern border in Arizona and there is no passport control along the fences. Governments control citizens and make up their own rules anyway.
