EXCLUSIVE: With mediation between Actors’ Equity Association and the Broadway League continuing its second and final scheduled day Thursday, 31 members of Congress — including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and GOP Rep. Mike Lawler — have signed a bipartisan letter urging “good faith negotiations” to avoid a strike that could have “significant economic disruption.”

Meanwhile, Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic front-runner for New York City mayor, is pledging solidarity with Equity and musicians union Local 802 AFM “as they fight for the care every worker deserves.”

...

Both Equity, which represents stage actors and stage managers, and the Broadway musicians union are in negotiations for new production contracts. Equity already has authorized a strike if negotiations break down, while Local 802 members are voting on a strike authorization beginning Thursday ahead of continued negotiations next week.

Among other things, both unions are seeking wage hikes and significant increases in producers’ contributions to their health insurance funds.

As it is, the Broadway stage is a mere shadow of what it once was. This could finally kill it.

Isn’t a strike basically the same thing as a Chunky Schumer “Shutdown”? Especially when it is “in solidarity” (cahoots) with a Muzzie Terrorist.

I wouldn’t miss the Broadway stage. It’s not what it once was.

Broadway could die for all I care. For years it has been nothing but political. poking the eye of normal Americans

Mamdani missed the old days of the downtrodden workers listening to the Communist Party member agitators and uniting them in union songs.

“Oh, you can’t scare me, I’m sticking to the union”

You are right. Broadway is a basically dead. The glory days are over and it is just too expensive for what you get. Adding still more costs and going on strike will much (or all) of what is left.

With all the Broadway songs I’ve referenced here it’s a shame the modern era version has fallen like this.

The lights of Broadway have been dim for a while

My mom, who lived in the NY area used to go to Broadway shows, but this was in the 40s and a woman who did office work could afford to see a Broadway play every now and then. What was once an affordable treat is now a luxury.

But the same thing can be said of Major League Baseball games (I had a box seat ticket for the ‘63 World Series—cost $16) and Disneyland.

Ah, the joys of being a geezer!

About the time I saw “The Producers” == I looked up the Congressional races - about 1600 candidates filed FEC paperwork for 435 seats.

They “don’t put their own money in the show.”

About 25% are successful - the same success rate as a Broadway show at the time.

If Madmandani is true to his “faith” there would be no music, no performances. No women would be allowed to sing, act, go to school, or even leave the house.

Everything is way too expensive. But then workers try to make them more expensive and wonder why they have no jobs.

Superbowl tickets from 1990-1999 went for $125-$350
In 2022 they were $8,869.00

Today's Broadway is not even a pale imitation of its glory days. Broadway was a truly American art form. The shows which became timeless weren't anti-American. Even bits of lightness like The Pajama Game or Bells are Ringing stand like gargantuan monuments compared to The Great Comet of 1812 with a Negress as Natasha or Hamilton cast with Negroes.

Why not The Color Purple as a musical, or a revival of Porgy and Bess which would showcase black talent?

Seating is fantastic too. I get right up railside to the finish line as they come thundering home. Thrilling.
