Weirdly, this problem mainly comes up from the anti-semitic neo-nazi right, and the islamo-facist left, not amongst 98% of aactual Jews.
Israel was a united Jewish nation state starting ~1000BC under King Saul, then King David who made the Jerusalem the capital. Zionism is no more than returning home from exile.

I’ve been told that those who engaged in founding a jewish homeland are “zionists” but the orthodox believe that can happen only after the 2nd coming and the re-building of the temple on the mount.

Relevance?
So Zionism is the national liberation movement of the Jewish people. If Zionism is criticized, then the national libertation movements that are the basis of most of the developing world are also undermined. This fits in with the globalist imperative for a one world government - that is, a new universal Empire.
