Keir Starmer has condemned an Israeli minister’s decision to invite Tommy Robinson to his country in the wake of the terrorist attack on a Manchester synagogue.
Amichai Chikli, Israel’s minister of diaspora and combating antisemitism, revealed on Friday that he had asked the “British patriot” – whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon – to visit the country.
He said: “Tommy is a courageous leader on the front line against radical Islam.
“At a time when Jews across Europe face rising antisemitism, it is vital to strengthen bonds with allies who refuse to be silent.”
The decision has already been condemned by UK Jewish groups including the Board of Deputies of British Jews and the Jewish Leadership Council.
In a joint-statement with other Jewish leaders, they said: “Tommy Robinson is a thug who represents the very worst of Britain.
“His presence undermines those genuinely working to tackle Islamist extremism and foster community cohesion.
“Minister Chikli has proven himself to be a diaspora minister in name only.
“In his darkest hour, he has ignored the views of the vast majority of British Jews, who utterly and consistently reject Robinson and everything he stands for.”
Asked for the prime minister’s response, his official spokesman said: “I’d point you to the statements of the Board of Deputies and the Jewish Leadership Council and other Jewish organisations.
“They’ve been crystal clear that that individual does not speak for the decent, tolerant, patriotic majority of this country.”
Downing Street has also urged pro-Palestine protesters to show “humanity” and think twice about taking part in any demonstrations on the second anniversary of the October 7 attacks tomorrow.
Starmer and home secretary Shabana Mahmood condemned the demonstrations which still went ahead despite last week’s synagogue attack, in which two Jewish men were killed and three others seriously injured.
