Here’s what people forget. The Soviets had waged a brutal starvation genocide against the Ukraine that killed as many as 7 million Ukrainians (Google holomodor). The Ukrainian Nazis slaughtered Jews and Russians, not just Communists. Payback for the Holodomor was only a small piece of the puzzle. Another factor was the myth of Viking descent cultivated by pro-Aryan Ukrainians, and the history of Germanic colonization throughout the Ukraine during the Tsarist era. "Real" Nazis proclaim Germanic superiority over the "inferior" slavic races, but the Ukrainian Nazis managed to convince themselves that they were more Aryan than Slavic.

The myth is perpetuated today by Western propaganda that tries to portray Ukraine as being far different from Russia, when it is really just the Russian frontier populated by historically Russian people. "The Ukraine" literally translates as "The Borderlands" in both Ukrainian and Russian, and indeed those languages seem more like different dialects than a separate language.
