The federal government is offering unaccompanied migrant children 14 and older $2,500 to leave the United States of their own volition, or “self-deport” back to their countries, according to a memo sent by the Department of Health and Human Services and obtained by NBC News.

The notice was sent Friday afternoon to legal service providers around the country that represent unaccompanied migrant children. Eligible children are those who are from countries other than Mexico and who are currently in the custody of the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR), which is part of HHS.

I suppose if they got themselves here, they can get themselves home.

This must be kids who were kidnapped, or whose parents believed they would be “anchor kids” to grease their own skids.

The administration is certainly not just sending them off with no destination but a dot on a map where they will have to fend for themselves.

Self deportation is a great idea for adults. Unless a minor is accompanied by an adult vetted by the government then it should not be an option for them.

As much as I agree with Trump’s policy on the border and illegal immigration I can’t agree with a policy that could put children in danger. Even those here illegally. Getting them back to their own country is the right thing but it must be done in a way that does its best assure they won’t fall into the same hands that exploited them in the first place.

Who said they did. Most were likely abandoned at the border by whatever cartel member brought them that far.

I agree with you and withdraw my comment. You’re right, they need to be returned but effort must be made to insure they are returned safely.

Thanks. I’d even favor of a family or person sponsoring and housing a child as an alternative to deportation (which means covering costs such as medical) as long as the goal was for the child to become a citizen. The main point being it would be done without government aid.

Wouldn’t this just provide incentive for more people to send their children here?

No, because the sponsorship would be for those minors who have been residing here and would other wise be deported. The deportation orders would not be removed but stayed until proof the sponsors had helped the minor apply for citizenship. It would also require making sure the sponsor could truly cover the costs associated with the minor remaining. Any loss of that support would mean the order would move forward.
