Americans’ confidence in the mass media has edged down to a new low, with just 28% expressing a “great deal” or “fair amount” of trust in newspapers, television and radio to report the news fully, accurately and fairly. This is down from 31% last year and 40% five years ago.
Meanwhile, seven in 10 U.S. adults now say they have “not very much” confidence (36%) or “none at all” (34%).
When Gallup began measuring trust in the news media in the 1970s, between 68% and 72% of Americans expressed confidence in reporting. However, by the next reading in 1997, public confidence had fallen to 53%. Media trust remained just above 50% until it dropped to 44% in 2004, and it has not risen to the majority level since. The highest reading in the past decade was 45% in 2018, which came just two years after confidence had collapsed amid the divisive 2016 presidential campaign.

28% of the people in this country are fools.
The meme used to be, over 30 years ago,:
All the news that’s fit to print.
Then they morphed to:
All the news you need to know.
It sounded helpful, but it meant that THEY would pick and choose what they wanted you to know.
That was the beginning of the end to unbiased coverage!
Yes. Agree.
During elections there have been estimates that voters were swayed by the news media affecting a 7-9% drop in Trump votes by people who believed in the slanders against Trump.
I hate those people. If hostilities go beyond just Antifa and mobs in cities, I will remember them. And my wife’s siblings. And some people from work before I retired. And most of my neighbors. I’m in the 85% always Dem voting Southeastern Michigan area. And the people in stores around here.
Example: At the only Barnes and Noble for 35 miles, I was buying a conservative book last year. The quite elderly salesperson leaned toward me and whispered “I am a conservative, too. I am the one and only one on this store’s staff. If they every find out, I’m finished.”
I said “God bless you.”
It’s all propaganda the news the news people can’t stand ever watching it if I walk into a room and it’s on it makes my skin crawl
Do not believe it.
It was probably 0.28%. They missed the decimal point. That I might believe.
Survey methodology is at the bottom of the link.
4% MoE.
Nuff said.
The next step was “All the lies we want you to believe.”
Gallup is just trying to be meta; their trust rating is about 20% so actually (28...20): so yeah about 5%.
If they keep going eventually they’ll punch through the event horizon and their rating will start going up so advertisers can be re-assured.
I’m shocked it’s that high. Probably a rounding error.
28%? Huh, that high. Would expected much much lower.

We still need to cut the cord and stop funding them.
Exactly, and 5% is probably to high.
Exactly, and 5% is probably to high
++++++++
I’ll be OK with the trust in media number when it tracks with Brandon Johnsons (Chiraq mayor) approval number, which is around 6-8%
Well, IIRC, Congressional esteem is around 10%. So, the media must be trusted 2 to 3 times as much as Congress! /S
Trust in media is by those who get their english and history lesson in one place.
Thanks. I have heard there are good people a great distance away from me. I have to force myself to remember that.
