Napheesa Collier calls out WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert: ‘Worst leadership in the world’
The Athletic - NY Times ^ | Sept. 30, 2025 | Ben Pickman

Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa Collier lambasted WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert and the league office on Tuesday, saying that the WNBA has the “worst leadership in the world.”

Less than 48 hours after Minnesota’s season-ending Game 4 semifinals loss to the Phoenix Mercury, Collier read a two-page prepared statement at a news conference in Minneapolis that criticized the league’s officiating, Engelbert and the WNBA’s approach to the ongoing Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations...

Englebert released a statement through a WNBA spokesperson on Tuesday afternoon. “I have the utmost respect for Napheesa Collier and for all the players in the WNBA,” she said in the statement. “Together we have all worked tirelessly to transform this league. My focus remains on ensuring a bright future for the players and the WNBA, including collaborating on how we continue to elevate the game. I am disheartened by how Napheesa characterized our conversations and league leadership, but even when our perspectives differ, my commitment to the players and to this work will not waver.”...

During her statement, Collier also said she talked to Engelbert last winter at Unrivaled, the 3×3 professional winter basketball league that Collier co-founded and launched last year with her husband, Alex Bazzell. Collier said she asked Engelbert why high-profile players such as Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese and Paige Bueckers were such significant revenue drivers, but were paid so little by comparison. (Clark’s WNBA salary this season was $78,066.)

Collier said that Engelbert responded: “Caitlin should be grateful she makes $16 million off the court because without the platform that the WNBA gives her, she wouldn’t make anything.”...

You can't pay big salaries if nobody's coming and nobody's watching... Period!

Engelbert is correct... The players who can make money off endorsements should be thankful... Because there's no money to be made in the WNBA.

Why on earth would Clark walk away? She’s making millions on endorsements. That would evaporate without her WNBA gig.

She’ll get endorsements playing in Europe. She doesn’t need the WNBA. The WNBA needs her.

She’s right that the WNBA has the “worst leadership in the world” but probably not for the reasons that she thinks.

The leadership of the Welfare NBA is doing a great job collecting and cashing their welfare checks from the NBA.

I don’t see a problem here.

If they got more attendance it would just reduce the welfare check—why bother.

WNBA is the prototypical DEI contraption. Money losing, heavily susidized and appealing to very few woke people.

Ironically, the WNBA doesn’t allow trans people to play.

The few players who do drive some revenue are partially subsidizing all those who do not. But the majority of the subsidizing is done by the men of the NBA.

Is anyone holding a gun to Napheesa’s head and forcing her to play a playground and high school game that wouldn’t even exist as a college sport without Title IX?
