Denmark leads large military exercise in Greenland, without US

Denmark did not invite the U.S. military to take part in Arctic Light 2025, the largest military exercise in Greenland's modern history, as NATO allies step up defence cooperation in the Arctic amid U.S. interest in the island. Denmark's Arctic commander, Soren Andersen, confirmed that, while U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had been invited, no U.S. military units were asked to participate.

"We work together with colleagues on the U.S. Pituffik Space Base, but they were not invited with units for this exercise," Andersen told Reuters.

The U.S. has previously participated in Denmark-led military exercises in Greenland. A spokesperson at the U.S. Embassy in Copenhagen said that "while we are not participating in this particular exercise, we continue our robust military cooperation with the Kingdom of Denmark and other Arctic allies".

Independent military analyst Hans Peter Michaelsen told Reuters the exercise has "a strong political signalling" to demonstrate Denmark's stewardship of Greenland with NATO allies.

Any exercise Denmark and other NATO countries do in Greenland without US involvement is a joke. Flag waving and nothing else. We are not your enemy Denmark…. Surely we can work something out. President Trump loves to make deals lol.

Denmark is a nation of five million with a commensurate military. How could they possibly hold Greenland if anyone wanted to take it? Don’t get me wrong I have a couple of good friends who are Danish - wonderful people. But let’s be real.

Denmark must be zeroed out. It's a disgusting country, home of the "Dutch Oven".

There is nothing to "work out."

Denmark is pleased with the status quo. It has Greenland and wants to keep it. No need for a "deal."

Trump scared Denmark into defending Greenland against Chinese/Russian incursion - at no additional cost to the USA. Sounds like a win to me.

Last time I tried that? A girl got knocked up and we are still married. 54 years, it’s not a record but we both own our property. 😐

to demonstrate Denmark's stewardship of Greenland with NATO allies

I wonder what Denmark's position would be with no NATO. Europe isn't going to lift a finger to help Denmark secure Greenland. Greenland seems like a cross-Atlantic liability for Denmark - without the US.

>> the largest military exercise in Greenland’s modern history

upon reading the title, I was thinking, “the first military exercise?”

I too like dutch ovens and use one 2 or 3 times per month - are they Danish or are they like Stilton - denied that she was even Dutch?

Danes should be free to have their own military action on their own soil without some other country’s permission or involvement.

From the article: "...involves more than 550 soldiers, including special forces, from Denmark, France, Germany, Sweden and Norway."

MORE THAN 550. Or, for Navy folks, less than two destroyer crews. For Army folk, less than a battalion. But more than 550.

“Arctic Light 2025, running from September 9 to 19, involves more than 550 soldiers, including special forces, from Denmark, France, Germany, Sweden and Norway.” Large. As in not.
