Scramble to save Starmer amid revolt that could oust him before the next election after Mandelson disaster

Downing Street was on Sunday night scrambling to protect Keir Starmer as it emerged No 10 was aware of the fatal allegation against Lord Mandelson days before he was sacked.

The Daily Mail understands that No 10 knew at the start of last week that the Labour grandee had suggested paedophile Jeffrey Epstein’s first conviction was wrongful and should be challenged.

Sources insisted that the Prime Minister was not informed before he expressed confidence in the then-US ambassador in the Commons on Wednesday.

It came amid a deepening revolt over Sir Keir’s handling of the crisis, and growing speculation that the PM could be ousted before the next general election.

Mutinous MPs yesterday warned that Sir Keir was ‘supping in the last-chance saloon’, while the Tories accused him of going ‘missing in action’ over the scandal.

The Prime Minister is expected to break his ‘damning silence’ on the crisis on Monday, but on Sunday night Downing Street would not reveal who kept the information about Lord Mandelson from him.

In the worst week of his premiership, Sir Keir sacked the Labour peer from his post as ambassador to the US.

It came after emails were published showing that Lord Mandelson had sent supportive messages to Epstein even as he faced jail for sex offences.

But it has emerged that Downing Street became aware of the damning correspondence on Tuesday – two days before he was sacked.

The Daily Mail can reveal No 10 was told then that the emails contained suggestions by Lord Mandelson that Epstein’s first conviction was wrongful and should be challenged.

But sources insisted that the information, which came in a 2,000-word memo from Bloomberg News which was seeking comment from Lord Mandelson, was not shared with Sir Keir, who told MPs during Wednesday’s Prime Minister’s Questions...

And Lord Mandelson lost his job because Jeffrey Epstein paid for Mandelson’s travel expenses among other Epstein things.

But there’s nothing to Jeffrey Epstein didn’t Starmer get the memo.

During his teenage years he joined the Young Communist League due to the UK’s support of the United States’ role in the Vietnam War.

On 10 September 2025, further communication from Mandelson to Epstein was published widely, including an email sent in June 2008 after Epstein’s conviction for soliciting prostitution from someone aged under 18 and before his sentencing, where he wrote: “You have to be incredibly resilient, fight for early release and be philosophical about it as much as you can. The whole thing has been years of torture and now you have to show the world how big a person you are, and how strong. I think the world of you and I feel hopeless and furious about what has happened. I can still barely understand it. It just could not happen in Britain. Everything can be turned into an opportunity and that you will come through it and be stronger for it. Your friends stay with you and love you”. In a response to the email, Mandelson said: “I relied on assurances of his innocence that turned out later to be horrendously false.”

Mandelson is gay and said to be “intensely private” about his personal life. Mandelson considers himself a good role model for gay people because of his success in public office. Having lived in London with Reinaldo Avila da Silva, a Brazilian translator, since March 1998, Mandelson wed his partner on 28 October 2023. The couple have a collie dog named Jock, who became popular at parties in the British ambassador’s residence.

I do not understand the basic facts here.

Epstein had only one conviction, around 2008.

He pleaded guilty to paying one under age female for sex.

That was it.

He also agreed to pay cash settlements to about 35 other young women, with out admitting any criminal conduct.

Over the next ten years, he made cash settlements with at least 5 more women.

Once again - he admitted no criminal conduct.

He was not hit with new criminal charges until 2019, and he allegedly committed suicide a couple months later.

Epstein was an expert on prostitution. He would ask each woman how old she was. If they ever said below 18, he would not touch them. In addition, he would pay each woman at least $350 in cash (inflation adjusted).

If criminal charges were filed in the future, the under age women might be compelled to admit they lied about their age, and accepted money for sex. Most of them were quite happy to accept a cash settlement, with zero testimony, plus anonymity.
