Britain is 'sleepwalking into a dystopian nightmare' under proposals to force everyone to have a digital ID card, civil liberty campaigners warned last night.
Sir Keir Starmer is 'exploring' the idea, No 10 admitted this week, after Emmanuel Macron demanded action that would make Britain less attractive to illegal migrants.
But civil liberty groups yesterday warned that it will turn Britain into a 'papers, please' society.
Rebecca Vincent, of Big Brother Watch, said: 'While Downing Street is scrambling to be seen as doing something about illegal immigration, we are sleepwalking into a dystopian nightmare where the entire population will be forced through myriad digital checkpoints to go about our everyday lives.
'Mandatory digital ID… will not stop small boat crossings, but it will create a burden on the already law-abiding population to prove our right to be here.
'It will turn Britain into a 'Papers, please' society.'
Gracie Bradley of Liberty said a new scheme was 'likely to be even more intrusive, insecure and discriminatory' than the Labour government's failed 2006 plan to bring in ID cards.
Former Labour prime minister Tony Blair's nascent card scheme was scrapped by the incoming Coalition government in 2010.
Ms Bradley added that an 'expensive and unjustified ID scheme… threatens our rights'.
Tory justice spokesman Robert Jenrick also criticised the latest proposal. He said: 'Most employers who are employing individuals illegally are doing so knowingly.
'Asking them to check ID cards rather than the current checks that they are already obliged to do is not going to make a blind bit of difference to illegal migration.'
French president Mr Macron has told Sir Keir to address 'pull factors' attracting migrants to Britain in return for help in stopping the boats.

A Tunisia man in FRance went on a stabbing spree when a hotel demanded payment for his lodging & food.
Multi-pass!!
create a problem
solve it with more govt control
sop for tyrannies
Serves him right for not having a second amendment
I dunno. ID can be forged. Maybe to link an indemnity to a person they need something that can’t be stolen or forged. Perhaps some kind of mark on the hand or maybe even on their forehead.
indemnity=identity. auto correct
National ID cards are a highly unpopular idea in the UK and have been for decades. They only had them during World War II and ditched them right after the war. Every time this comes up, and it has multiple times, it gets headlines and then gets shelved by the government.
These UK Labor and USA Democrat scum want your automobile to have a “digital card” installed too. So they can tax you on excessive milage each tax year. Many new cars have this ability in their on-board computers. To track and record your daily, monthly, yearly milage.
Some states are making noises about this. Oregon iirc.
Of course this milage tax will be presented as a green guilt trip to save the f’ing planet from global warming.
In USA we already have this in the form of secure ID drivers licenses. But not fully implemented until they (state and Federale governments) put chips in them.
The world is on that road. We know where it goes and how the trip ends.
The WEF and similar organizations have been pushing this, and got a ball rolling via ‘world health’ during Covid. They’re just looking for something to give them ‘plausability’ to implement it. What they’re really wanting is CBDC, digital ID, and social credit scoring.
If this gets passed the Muslims will be exempt from carrying them “for religious reasons.” Watch and see.
“”create a problem
solve it with more govt control
sop for tyrannies””
Exactly. Just like govt creating the problem of terrorist attacks via lax, sucky or non-existent intelligence competence (9-11)... and then govt enacting overly-restrictive policies on ‘all’ Americans for the sake of “safety”. Almost like... it was deliberate incompetence... (See: Butler Trump assassination attempt - lack of intel preventative actions).

Orwell’s predictions were right on, but about 40 years too soon.
