Their family about to cash in.
RIP.
Uh-huh.
Kind of makes it sound like the driver of the car was at fault, doesn’t it?
They were legal, albeit barely.
Singh was not...on many levels.
While living in South Florida for about 15 years, I had many encounters with Haitians, and they were some of the most impressive people I have met. Exceptionally courteous, very helpful. The families I met in our West Palm Beach subdivision were remarkable in their emphasis on education and professional accomplishments. I know people tend to think of a particular image of Haitians based on what is left in Haiti and what gets in the media. However, there have been numerous generations who have left and migrated to the US and elsewhere, and they are often the cream of the crop.
If there ever were a case for international intervention, it would have to be Haiti. Unfortunately, the UN would be unable to accomplish the task. Perhaps a French, British, and American effort. It would require occupation, a ton of investment, and most importantly the imposition of a Constitution that protected liberty and property rights. Pretty basic stuff, but they have no protection there now.
These individuals were traveling to Indiana to pursue employment opportunities. That is a lot more initiative than many Americans would display. It is very sad, and an indictment of the States that allowed this clown to get a CDL.
I'm starting to think maybe there's more of these folks in the country than they're telling us.
That’s like being a little bit pregnant. They shouldn’t have been here.
I mean, "Driving 101" states, "Be able to stop for unforeseen obstacles."
We all learn this. At least, we're supposed to.
Put enough distance between you and the car in front of you to stop in time if sh*t goes south.
Is this still not basic drivers ed?
It is, until someone goes perpendicular on the highway right in front of you in direct contravention of the clearly stated law and common sense.
I drive a lot in heavily congested areas (have for decades) and you simply cannot always maintain a safe stopping distance. You cannot. You can stop driving or avoid highways, but it isn’t always possible.
If you attempt to maintain distance someone will pull right in front of you and halve or quarter your stopping distance and there isn’t a thing to do about it except slow down further.
If you don’t drive in congested areas, it can be done. I do it when I can. But it isn’t always possible. You cannot protect yourself in all circumstances, or people would.
So, if you place the fault on the driver in this case, I will disagree with you.
No.
My dad was a driver ed teacher back in the 50’s but refused to teach me.
He hired one of his colleagues.
But Dad taught me two life saving rules:
1) At a Stop sign look left FIRST (because that traffic will hit you first) then right, then quick left again.
2) Always “drive” the SECOND vehicle in front of you.
I recognize this as an effort to take blame off of the person most wholly responsible for the tragedy.
I could be wrong, as it is easy these days to be wrong with things happening so quickly, but I don’t feel that I am in this case.
I dunno...
I'm not crying for a minivan full of dead Haitians.
Deport them all, as far as I'm concerned.
Mr. Stiles, our drivers ed teacher in High School drilled that into our heads, I never forgot that.
That is what I always strive to do simply because watching the person in front of you simply will not always allow you to stop. I try to watch the cars in front of that one.
In today’s environment, that helps.
You cannot control the distance between you and the vehicle following.
You should almost always control the distance between you and the vehicle ahead, even if congested, even if tailgated, even if the azzole behind you starts flashing their high beams.
They need to get a life and you need to save a life!
If not for illegals, American highways would have zero casualties!
Was the driver, Singh, the subject of a petition signed by 250,000 people that the law should consider that Hindi drivers aren’t careful? Yeah, he was.
"who were legally paroled into the United States"
My small city has about 5K Haitians in a population of about 45 K, more or less.
They are extremely hard working, yes “doing the jobs that Americans refuse to do” and very Church-going.
IOW, pretty much “model citizens” except that they haven’t been able to take the oath.
Their Creole dialect is challenging but with a tad of French and a tad of Spanish communication can be workable.
I wish it could it be English but my German and Swiss German ancestors immigrated here in the mid 1700’s and only became fluent in English during WWI.
