Around 900 migrants arrive in the UK under darkness after Channel interceptions as numbers under 'smash the gangs' Starmer reach 52,180

Around 900 migrants arrived in the UK under darkness after being picked up in the Channel over the bank holiday weekend, providing further proof of the failure of Labour's 'smash the gangs' policy.

A total of 52,180 people have now arrived illegally in Britain since Sir Keir Starmer took office and ditched the Conservatives' Rwanda scheme - putting his faith instead in a vague plan to target people smugglers.

Ministers confirmed today that the first arrivals have been detained in a new one in, one out deal with France, but critics warn its narrow scope means it will do little to serve as a deterrent to would-be Channel migrants.

Footage from last night shows a Border Force vessel transporting a large group of people after they were picked up in the Channel. A day earlier, dozens of migrants were seen wading neck-deep into the sea off Calais to board a dinghy to reach Britain as temperatures soared.

Pictures showed women, children and men in orange life jackets attempting to climb onto a small rubber boat in the water on France's north coast. Officers in diving gear could be seen watching on from the shore and a rescue boat off Petit-Fort-Philippe beach in Gravelines.

A total of 212 migrants were brought into Dover after crossing in four different boats yesterday, according to official figures, which have not yet been updated to take in yesterday's arrivals.

Some of the migrants who arrived yesterday had children sitting on their shoulders while others reached out their hands to help those around them step off the boat and into the water.

In other shocking images, children were seen crying as they were pushed through the Channel with their heads barely held above the water's surface.

Why are they leaving France? They have all of the wine and cheese.

This is intentional, obviously.

The ‘smash the gangs’ is all for show.

We saw this trickery during the Biden administration when we were assured Congress had to pass new legislation to secure the border.

Republicans sent hapless Senator Lankford to negotiate with Schumer, coming up with a bill to make the whole situation worse.

Trump brought our “migrant” crisis to an abrupt end, and we’re not even an island.

They were willing to lose the election over it.

I'm hoping people stopped coming here and are now going for easier, more cushy UK opportunities.
