A Jewish-owned business in San Jose was vandalized Monday night, with hateful imagery spray-painted on the building and work vehicles.
It is being investigated by police as a targeted hate crime.
"They broke the windows, they broke side mirrors and swastikas and KKK on the door," HVAC & Insulation Gurus owner Lior Zeevi said. "It's very sad and very disappointing that's to do these kind of bad things. It makes no sense - this kind of hate."
Zeevi could not believe was he saw when he arrived at his business Tuesday morning.
His work vehicles covered in hateful graffiti as glass and broken car parts were on the floor.
The moment the business was vandalized was captured by surveillance footage from Monday night.
"Three guys came in and started spraying right away," Zeevi said. "You can see they are checking which vehicles have our stickers on it - so they targeted us, clearly. I just think that it was weak people that had nothing better to do."
We were there as San Jose police were on scene, the vandalism is being investigated as a hate crime.
Rabbi Mendel Weinfeld was sad to see such hate so close to home.
"It's very sad to see this, just for being Jewish," Weinfeld said. "This is a business who actually supports the community and does a lot for the community. We await the day that such things will never happen. We await the day of just goodness and kindness in the world."
Despite feelings of fear and anger, Rabbi Weinfeld says his religion teaches him the best way to combat hate like this is: when others go low, you go high.
"We've had such things throughout our history - we've had so much hate, and this is resilience Jewish people, where we come out of it stronger," Weinfeld said. "Our only response to hate is to do more light, to do more goodness, more kindness."
Zeevi was on his way to drop off his kids at school when he got the news Tuesday morning. He says he will use this incident as a teachable moment for them.
"I will definitely talk to them about it," Zeevi said. "I will explain to them that there is some people that don't like us, but we don't need to be afraid of them. And, like the Rabbi said, said we need to fight the darkness with light."
If you have any information about the vandalism, you are asked to contact SJPD.
Victims tend to be law abiding and accepting.
I once for some reason noticed an article about crime victims and it said FEW people are victims of crime. I had never given it any thought, oddly.
Gallup News reported 15%-17% of Americans were a crime victim each year for 2018 through 2020.
2022 US Dept. of Justice said 23.5 people per 1,000 were victims.
These all include various types of assaults, robbery, car stolen, rape and murder.
When I read that I had assume just about everybody had been a victim——like me. Not so.
I started going over the crimes against me since teenage years. Quite a few.
Must explain to an extent why I’m angry and support being tough on crime.
Umm. Don't hold your breath.
This looks like a job for Adam-12.
