Three months after a large transgender pride flag appeared on Yosemite National Park’s El Capitan, park officials have terminated one employee involved in hoisting the flag and placed two others on administrative leave. The unprecedented move sparked outrage among park staffers and community members, who described the actions as “a direct attack” by the Trump administration.
The terminated employee is scientist SJ Joslin, a 35-year-old who identifies as nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns. Joslin ran the park’s Big Wall Bats Program and managed data on wildlife across the national park.
On May 20, Joslin and her coworkers hung the transgender pride flag from El Capitan. Shortly after the flag went up, park officials reportedly ordered it to be taken down, and it was removed at around 10 a.m.
For Joslin, the purpose of hanging that flag was to celebrate their identity and to send a message of acceptance and love to the transgender community.
A press release Joslin issued to media Monday morning states that fellow climbers, allies and community members are calling for their reinstatement, along with an investigation into Yosemite’s “discriminatory employment practices” and “full transparency from the National Park Service and the Department of the Interior.”
Joslin has been meeting with Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility, a nonprofit that advocates for government employees on issues related to environmental protection, about the possibility of a wrongful termination lawsuit.
“I want my job back,” Joslin said.

Her/He/It’s job is not to promote transgenderism. It is to manage and study wildlife populations in the park.
“A message of acceptance and love to the transgender community”
More like the middle finger to the world.
Good riddance to garbage...
Agreed. He’s supposed to be a scientist. The trans lobby threw science out the window.
>> “I want my job back,” Joslin said.
“You need psychiatric care, nutbag!”, I said.
Who wants to see el Capitan with anything manmade marring the view?
Joslin, get right with G-d. You lost your job. You don’t know who you are, or what you are. Get help. It’s not too lare.
WINNING!!!
Imagine if an employee had put a giant MAGA flag on the mountain. Would these people who are now griping about the firing of the “scientist” be griping if the person who planted the MAGA flag was fired? Of course they wouldn’t.
Was this”scientist “ aware that the a national park is not an area for the display of offensive material? Only one flag is accepted and it has only 3 colors and 50 stars. I would suggest this unemployed mentally confused adult put the rag on a buffalo
Joslin got too big for her own britches. The employer decides what is acceptable self expression while on the job, not the employees. Joslin is too wrapped up in her Trans Flag activism to see things apolitically and in a more professional manner.
You don’t want that kind of arrogant employee returning. She would be treated like the Colin Kaepernick of Yosemite Park!
A rabble rouser.
So, no. Your re-application has therefore, been dropped into the Circular File.
Thanks for your interest!!
So... the he/she/it was likely on the clock when they put themselves and possibly others at risk by hanging a banner. They were likely using issued equipment. What LGBTQRSTUV group was going to pay their healthcare costs if they were injured, or their death benefits if they died doing it?
This isn't a 20-year-old intern. This is a 35-year-old.
managed data on wildlife across the national park.
My/
Probably falsifying data on bat population to grift an endangered designation.
Show these drama QUEENS what a direct attack really feels like.
This cup of coffee is a direct attack.
My taxes pay for that park and I don’t want to see any transtesticle flag anywhere near it.
The ONLY flag that should be there is the American flag.
Great news!
“I want my job back,” Joslin said.”
No. Now stomp your little faggy feet all the way to the unemployment office.
